Class of 2019 (the journey begins) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

Roro, welcome. I’m also from Toronto. I wonder if you attend the school that my D did! Sheridan should definitely be on your list, I agree with MTmom. My D is a Tisch grad so I know the challenges of applying as a Canadian. I’m happy to share our experience with you. Feel free to PM me. By the way, there are many Toronto actors who also work with students on audition prep. In my opinion, that’s a better option than doing it via Skype.

I think everyone on this thread will enjoy this video, we are sure to see some of this on the audition trail. All in good fun!!

@evilqueen, that was hysterical. The “15 minutes to change, eat…” is classic.

MTmom2015 and alwaysamom, Sheridan is most definitely on my list, sorry I forgot to include it in my original post! Alwaysamom, thank you for offering to share your experience as Canadians navigating this process, I will PM you sometime soon with my never-ending questions!

@evilqueen - that video was hilarious! Thanks for sharing!

Any of your kids doing summer programs? After much nagging, my son applied for the University of the Arts program. He’s taking a “gap year” and this may be the only fun he has during that time, so I’m happy he’s going.

That’s a great video! I love the 15 minutes to do everything line. Oh Goodness did I see myself! :-S

dcparent, I really wanted my D to do a college program this summer because of the great opportunities and learning experiences. My D chose to return to her summer camp, and honestly, since this is probably her last summer to be a kid and really have fun, I decided to be fine with it. Besides, she’ll be spending the second half of summer writing essays, filling out the common app and other apps, working on monologues and songs, filming prescreens…

mtflmomof1 - good for you and your D! Obviously being prepared for college auditions is important, but it sounds like your D will still have plenty of time this summer to work on the process, so it’s great that she is spending some of her summer doing what she wants to do. This is a marathon, not a sprint, so sometimes you just have to check out and have some fun. This way she’ll recharge her batteries from a long school year and then be ready to plunge in to the essay writing/prescreen filming/app completion that awaits!

@mtflmomof1, your daughter’s summer plans sound great. I’m sure I’ll be doing a lot of nagging/nudging than you will when it comes time to do the applications, prescreens, etc.

FYI, some schools have posted their audition dates on their web sites! Hartt, Indiana, Texas State and maybe more. Those are just the ones I’ve been religiously checking

Thanks so much @MTVT2015‌! I was hoping there might be some programs that would post those dates earlier than August! I feel like the next couple of months we’ll have the most amount of downtime that we will have in the next year. It would be nice to be as productive as possible with the info gathering!

Info gathering is a GREAT idea. I also recommend visiting as many schools as possible BEFORE fall- that way you at least get the “vibe”. Even better if you have done strong research on the program, and can ask intelligent questions while you are there, and make quality comparisons

Thanks MTVT2015!!!

I agree @toowonderful. Go before the audition dates if you can. I wish we would have done that and also wish he would have auditioned at more than 5 schools.

Another point- auditioning AT the college may or may not give you a realistic/complete idea of that college as a whole. It is a day filled with pressure for auditioners and auditors, everyone is trying to put their “best foot forward”, but may not be showing their full self. That was another reason I liked Unifieds, the audition was just the audition. Though to be fair, we did 3 on campus auditions, and all were very nice…but they were schools we had already visited, toured etc…so we had a mental image coming in.

The negative about going to visit before an audition is if you fall in love with a school based on your visit, and then don’t get accepted after the audition. It can be devastating and affect whether you’ll ever be comfortable with your ultimate destination.

@jeffandann that is exactly what happened with us. Loved the one school. He passed the pre screen went for the live audition thinks he had best audition ever but didnt make it. It was really hard. On the upside 2 days later he got accepted to a different school so it made that a bit easier.

We have decided only to visit schools my son has been accepted to, unless they have on campus auditions only. Most of my S’s auditions will be taken care of @ Unifieds. Just realizing I have to buckle up for this crazy ride!!!

We are actually planning on doing only on-campus auditions. With so many schools that will now be requiring pre-screens, we figure that if she is given an audition date then that would be a good time to check out that school. I’d hate to waste money on trips to schools beforehand where she might not even be given an audition. The prospect of Unifieds makes me nervous. It seems like a lot of pressure for those few days. Especially if an illness suddenly arises with so many auditions on the line at one time. Who knows what the right answer is…there are so many details that come into play!
