Class of 2019 (the journey begins) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

I think “20” is a good average number, considering there are some programs that take 12 or fewer, and some take 25 or more…

Yes these are averages of course.

But in order for these odds to work, you have to assume the 2500 applicants audition for all 40 schools. In reality and practicality most people audition for something closer to 10.

@halflokum excellent point, darn it!! It is close to as hard as it looks. Feels a little like that Seinfeld episode where they discover the frozen yogurt really isn’t fat free.

LOL!! @halflokum‌

But I give evilqueen props for the thought. And if you DID want to audition for all 40 schools, your odds might even be better than 25 or 50% because most other (sane) people will not! Of course you’ll be broke and will probably flunk out of high school because of all of the missed course work but hey… all in the name of beating the odds. :-)

Going back to an earlier part of this discussion, we’re touring a handful of schools this summer that on paper look like a good fit for my D. My main purpose in scheduling these tours is to give D the opportunity to compare large public schools with medium sized private, with small LAC, and also compare urban, suburban and rural. The only schools we’re visiting that I hope she truly falls in love with are the 2 safeties we’ve picked. Right now, referencing the discussion above, the odds of getting into a MT program may be better than I thought, but still no guarantees, so maybe the best MT school will be the one that accepts you. If the safety is a school the student loves, then at least some of pressure is off.

@mtflmomof1 you are so smart to invest time in discovering what there is to love about the safety school. Too many people ignore that piece and regret it later. Be sure to keep the dialogue going about the safety(s) and not only talk about the other schools this coming application round. It’s easy to forget about them in all of the chaos.

Thank god for safeties!!!

My D really likes her safety also. She would more than make it work there.

@evilqueen . . . doctorjohn is Dr. John Stefano, the head of Otterbein’s Theatre Department. He has some wonderful posts here on CC that are of benefit to all applicants, including this one: Audition advice - Musical Theater Major - College Confidential Forums;

Great article @kksmom5!! Thank you for sharing it!

But also remember that most schools have more “slots” than the actual number who end up there. For example, BOCO accepts about 150 to get that class of 56. So cheer up. :stuck_out_tongue:

Great article @kksmom5! Thanks for sharing!

I just read that on the Otterbein website last week! Priceless info for this upcoming audition season!

I have been perusing the school audition web pages and Western Carolina has their 2014/2015 auditions dates up.

Uggggg! My D’s SAT scores are not good. She is just not good at standardized test. She will have to take a class and the test again. The problem now is she can’t take the October test because we will be in NYC for Mock Auditions. She will have to wait until November. Now I have to call all the schools and make sure that isn’t too late. Uggggg! (this is the venting part)

"But in order for these odds to work, you have to assume the 2500 applicants audition for all 40 schools. In reality and practicality most people audition for something closer to 10. "

Not really, because any one school doesn’t have 800 openings. It’s like buying lottery tickets. If your chances are 1 in a million if you buy one, they do not become 1 in 500,000 if you buy 2, they become 2 in a million. The more tickets you buy (schools you try out for) the more chances YOU have, but it doesn’t really change the odds overall.

@evilqueen - has she tried the ACT? Dates are different- might make an earlier test possible.

My son is taking the ACT on 6/14
