@CE527M you have no idea how helpful it is to have someone that has been in the same position that I’m currently in! From what I’ve read about Missouri, the only scathing reviews appear to come from people who dislike the favoritism of the journalism students or are turned off by the intense sports culture. Neither would be a problem for me ;P. My cousin goes there now, but he’s a little bit…less motivated of a student, and he doesn’t really like the kind of people that go there (“backwater”). I don’t know what truth there is to that sweeping generalization, but I’ve grown up in Chicago where I’m super used to people being liberally minded and going to school with a large diversity in the makeup of the student body. That is definitely something I want to consider verrryyyy carefully.
My only real predicament is finding schools that are good at journalism and business, or that are good at journalism and even have a business program. I don’t know how hard it would be to double major at a place like Mizzou, but I feel like being in a position where I was closer to the top of the class would make it a lot easier confidence-wise to succeed as well as graduate on time. Just out of curiosity, you mentioned being interested in double majoring in order to increase the versatility of your skillset. What are you double majoring in at Mizzou, if anything?
Hmmm, well I think I’ll be on CC for a while tonight, no homework to do and I can at least trick myself into thinking this is “research”. I’ll be back soon with some write-ups of colleges I’ve been looking at. The way I see it, it’s practice writing and prepping me for the imminent future! Win-win!
@WindyCityKid I’ll be double-majoring in journalism and political science. From what I hear and know, it’s fairly easy to double major, especially if you enter with plenty of AP and/or dual enrollment credits (which I’ll have) because you can get a lot of your gen eds out of the way.
There are definitely some conservative, southern, typical preppy people (assuming that’s what your cousin means by “backwater”), but with 30k students, you can find people from all types of backgrounds. On the class of 2019 Facebook group, there are a lot of people from the Chicago area, and also plenty of OOS students from elsewhere.
Business is a very popular major at Mizzou and they have a fairly decent program from what I’ve heard. Definitely not the caliber of UCB and such, but definitely not a bad program, either. Worth taking a look at.
First up! Would the University of Missouri please step into the ring?!?
Weighing in at 26,965 undergraduates and a (almost meaningless) sticker price of $40,126, Mizzou straps on its gloves and adopts a fighting stance.
The Windy City Kid throws the first punch. “Can you major in sports journalism?” Mizzou dodges swiftly. “Of course! Two different varieties, in fact.” Mizzou adds with a wink.
The WCK squares up and fires a quick one-two. “What’s admission to the journalism school look like? How about the honor’s college?” Mizzou dismissively throws up two hands and blocks the punches. “Automatic for someone like you. And with your ACT score, you’d be eligible for some very grrrrrrreat programs.” Another wink. (This tiger is really starting to get creepy.)
The Windy City Kid is admittedly a little dogged at this point. Time to go for the knockout. “How will I fit in at the University of Missouri?” The tiger sidesteps easily, throwing me to the side of the ring and greeting me with a smile. “With over 600 registered student organizations, a captivating D1 sports culture, a prestigious journalism school, and a tight-knit honors college, you’ll fit like a glove!” This time, the tiger winks with both eyes. Wait. Isn’t that just a blink? I smile and exit the ring, contented at the prospects of Mizzou and ready to fight another day.
I’m actually a junior in HS just like you! Heavily looking at Mizzou. I adored it when I visited. If you wanna know my metrics you can visit my page, but long story short: I, like you, am honors college material, and somewhat less seriously than you am considering sports journalism.
But both my parents went there and had friends who were successful in the J school. And hey, Brad Pitt attended the J School, so you can’t go wrong there.
Also you’re eligible for in-state tuition given your ACT, and if you’re a NMS you get another 1000. Add that to a bunch of departmental scholarships they have available and you can pretty much go there only having to pay for books, fees and room & board. Somewhere around 15,000 or less.
Haha @chuckleberry we could be journalism pals XD. But seriously though, it’s crazy how quickly this stuff comes up on you, while I feel like I’m more prepared and informed than a lot of my classmates, there’s so much information and options that it’s a wonder people make up their minds at all
I think it is worth it to factor in the location as well. Mizzou’s location isn’t ideal whereas Boston, Chicago, New York, and DC are much better for an aspiring journalist. As for the clubs and D1 sports, you can really get that anywhere. It’s also worth noting that if you switch from journalism, the value of that Mizzou degree is lower for the other colleges and when at a different school, the value for that degree will really be the same.
Haha I absolutely loved it when I visited there, even with the mindset that I wanted nothing to do with the place because of how close it was to my house. Medill left me floored and their opportunities for aspiring journalists seem top notch. @CaliCash what concentration of journalism are you looking to major in?
Well since I’m mainly thinking medical my top choices are UNC, Mizzou, Bama, ND, and Vandy. Bama’s only an option because for me money is a big deal and I can go there for free because of national merit; however, UNC has some scholarships that might make it worlds more attractive. ND and Vandy are my dream schools, but I’m doubtful that I can get in at either place
@WindyCityKid I’ve loved seeing your posts, haha! Definitely following your journey. If I were you, I’d definitely heavily consider Mizzou. I personally consider it a very good school, about 4 stars on a 5 star scale. The J-school would obviously have to be a full 5. Hopefully the tiger’s winks don’t creep you out any more!
