Class of 2020 National Merit Discussion

How were students notified by the high school? I don’t think d20 has a school email address.

@ebh87 they were all called into the GC office. There were 27 of them that year, they were given info on setting up their NM account, time/date for the school’s NM pizza lucheon and time/date for the school group NM picture.

@3scoutsmom ok, thanks. D20 does dual enrollment full time and doesn’t take classes at the high school. We only get 1-3 NM students a year (maybe 1-2) so there definitely won’t be a luncheon or group picture! Funny how different schools are. 27!?!?

@ebh87 I’m sure your GC will call, if you D should call her as soon we hear something. Yes, iis odd how different school have different numbes of NM kids, I think that some schools just have a different ‘test culture’ than others

DD goes to a really small school and is likely the only NMSF this year, although there should be at least one or two hispanic scholars and multiple commended students. I hope their GC notifies them early. She seems to know very little about this whole process. Ugh. Good luck to everyone!!

DD made a 1510 on PSAT her sophomore year. When she was supposed to take the PSAT her Junior year when it counted, Hurricane Michael was demolishing our county. I contacted PSAT/NMSC and got the procedure for substituting an SAT score for the PSAT. She made a 1430 on the SAT we submitted. I can’t find good data on how that score will convert to PSAT. Does anyone have experience with this? Also I wonder if they would have accepted her sophomore score as I didn’t think to ask about that. Did we hurt her chances at National Merit? We obviously live in Florida.

There was a mom on the hs 2018 forum that had a son qualified based on his SAT. I don’t think she post anymore. I seem to remember her name was something with Dea in it. Her son took the NMF package at New Mexico University. They were from California.

@brentwoodmom . My D20 has Alabama at the top of her list. She is 3 points above the cutoff from last year in our state, so we are very optimistic. We visited Alabama in July and she fell in love! I would love to know more about your son’s NM experience with Alabama. Did they have any special recruiting events in the fall for NMSF? It seems impossible to beat the package that they are offering–and the campus and facilities were gorgeous! Thanks for sharing your experiences!

@packattack1018 My daughter had to do the SAT as an alternative also because she wasn’t able to take the PSAT due to a death. So I confirmed how the scoring works with NM:

Look at the details of her score. She should have 3 subscores that fall between 10-40.

Let’s say her subscores are
Math 38.5
English 36
Reading 35

To make the SAT comparable to the PSAT, they cap the scoring of each section at 38, even though you can get up to 40. So the math score would only count as 38.

You double the math score- 38 x 2= 76

Then you add the reading and English together 71, and then double it, 142.

Then add those together: 218. That would be the selection index NM uses.

@packattack1018 they will simply take the selection score index from you SAT and count it as if it was from your PSAT. So you need your to figure out your selection index not your total score.

Have your child go to their CB account and click more details under their SAT score to get their individual section scores, then to calculate your Selection Index, double the sum of your Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Test scores.

I don’t believe they would have accepted sophomore year scores.

Are there any trends like it always comes out on the 4th Tuesday of August?

The problem is the postal service and the schools. NMSC mails notifications to the schools via bulk mail. Bulk mail has a low priority and there’s no telling when it will arrive after being sent. After it does arrive at the school it could sit on someones desk for days before they mention it to the students.

@mom2twingirls
Sorry, i didn’t see your post last night. They have a scholars weekend in Jan., and they have a NM reception as part of that.
My husband and son went to the weekend this past Jan and both had a great time. Our son met some other kids and a ton of deans/faculty. I would definitely recommend it if you can go.

@brentwoodmom , thank you for posting #268 for calculating a PSAT from a SAT score with examples for my little brain :slight_smile: My son is taking the PSAT this October and he did a regular SAT for practice at home. My question is about the math subscore----he has two math subscores----one for the calculator section and one for the non calculator section. You said, the most amount would be 40 points but with both sections, he has 48. I think I’m doing something wrong. Do I only count the noncalculator section, maybe? Thank you for clarifying!

@3scoutsmom , re: calculating PSAT from SAT scores…do you use the raw or weighted scores for the math? calculator and no calculator sections added together? Thanks for any help you can offer!

@TXRunningMom Add the number of correct answers from both math sections together and use the raw score conversion table to get a scaled score. That’s the one you use for the calculation. (So if the scaled score is 680, drop the 0. @3scoutsmom uses half that number (34) and doubles it but some SAT scoring booklets will give you the 680 instead of the 34. Clear as mud?)

@Reebtoor , I sent you a pm… Thanks for your help!

@brentwoodmom
Thank you for the information on the January program. We will definitely plan to attend that. As we move through this process I may reach out to you again if you’re ok with that. Thanks again!

Can someone explain how to send a pm? Can’t seem to figure it out.

@mom2twogirls you ned a longer posting history, I think 10 real posts - this is for spam prevention. Unless they have changed things with the new, down graded format, you shuld be able to recieve and reply to PMs so just ask the person you want to PM to please PM you.
