Congratulations to everyone whose kiddos made it! I look forward to following how everyone’s college journeys with their seniors play out. My daughter is definitely a better fit for a smaller liberal arts college, none of which have the big NMF packages. But there are a couple that have unrelated scholarships that hopefully being NMSF will help with. I’m also going to make her apply to UT Dallas which, of the schools that do have the big NMF awards, I think would be the best fit for her. I’ll take her to one of the NMF preview days there and let her see if being part of the NMF/Honors/McDermott community there makes a larger school seem more doable.
@ChrisG77 My daughter really likes UT Dallas but size is definitely an issue for her. She thinks a smaller school would be a better fit and we agree but other than that it seems like a good place for her.
We are in DFW suburbs and nothing in the area has been announced. DallasISD released names but no one else. School still has nothing? So weird and disappointing
Advice…maybe should be on another thread, but this where I’ve spent the most time and there are families in a very similar situation here regarding NMSF
My son obviously made it to semi-finalist and has a 35 ACT. He took the SAT with zero prep and got a 1400. Would you suggest some prep and retake the SAT or do you think the NMSF and a 35 ACT are good to move forward with?
@macarthur ACT of 35 should be fine. Make sure to have it sent to NMSC. Instructions should be in what your kid received access to in their online portal.
@macarthur A 35 ACT is a phenomenal score and more than enough to work as the qualifying score for NMF. A lot of kids just do better on one or the other test. Looks like the ACT is his test, no reason at all for him to spend the time prepping for the SAT when he has a score like that.
Where can I find the full 2020 National Merit Semifinalist list?
i can’t find the full list, but here’s florida in case anyone is interested:

Your local paper should publish your local or state list. You should contact them. Our local paper refuses to publish our county list because they say the list is “too long” (usually 300+ students). I’ve asked them if they could send me a copy of the press release, but no response yet. I also called NMSC to see if I could either get a state list from them or if they could direct me to another local news outlet that could provide me with the press release/list. They would not send me the list, and there was no other local newspaper that they sent the press release to. They did say they would send a release to another smaller local paper. The lady from NMSC that I talked to was lovely, and expressed frustration that our newspaper didn’t want to publish the names. I don’t really mind if the list is published or not – I just kind of wanted to keep the list for my dd as a memento.
I don’t know about the full list, but for my city I just googled “Austin 2020 National Merit Semifinalists” and got this… https://patch.com/texas/downtownaustin/75-austin-seniors-are-national-merit-scholarship-semi-finalists
If anyone sees a state list for California, please pass it on. I haven’t seen one yet. We have to find that one because our paper in San Diego county does not intend to publish our local list.
Same here. SJ Mercury News has not published the list as it did last year.
Nothing from our school and nothing published from the media. I broke down and called NMSC and they confirmed that my daughter is NMSF and said to call the school. I called but the school day is over and no one answered.
Can someone provide the texas list when available
Nothing from my son’s school either…wondering if they thought it was inappropriate due to it being 9/11?
I also called the NMSC and got confirmation that my son qualified. It’s a bummer that the school is being so quiet on the issue.
My DD school just emailed (in response to my email) saying they would pull the kids tomorrow midday to tell them all at the same time. So many kids have off block at the beginning or end of the day, so it’s too late now.
If anyone sees the TX list, then please share. I’m sure she’s fine but I know they’ve had the list and haven’t done anything with it. These kids (and parents) just need the confirmation
The index cut off is 221 for TX -if your kid has that he’s got it. Check your local paper they may have published the list.
Here’s Austin. https://patch.com/texas/downtownaustin/75-austin-seniors-are-national-merit-scholarship-semi-finalists?fbclid=IwAR2UHf0pXgYvcYaTyC9zlgF3cO2R4AuQFjKrEsQtq9a53Y7QKBhpYyWogbgI don’t know that anyone but news outlets have a TX list. They send it with a press release to newspapers. Then newspapers decide whether they are going to print it. I imagine Houston papers will post their readership areas, Dallas theirs, and other parts of the state theirs.
@border1218 I can’t thank you enough for posting this Florida list! My googling skills must be lacking as I couldn’t find this anywhere We are in the same boat as many, daughter qualified but crickets so far from the school. It is disappointing to see so many schools recognizing their students through social media yet we haven’t heard a peep from ours.
Just because I find numbers fascinating, in the list of Asutin area NMSF that @chrisG77 posted, Westlake, the school that has 49 NMSFs is a public/not magnet school has a senior class size this year of 700. Westwood is also pulic/not magnet with 42 NMSFs has a senior class size of 670. Lake Travis is similar but only has one NMSF this year but had 37 last year I wonder what happened??
