Class of 2020 National Merit Discussion

Finally!!! USPS Informed delivery shows the scan of the letter arriving today from NMSC. We’re in Austin, TX. Intellectually I knew she made it, but we had not heard from her counselor and the school definitely should have received their letter by now. My daughter will not be attending one of the NMF full ride schools. None of the schools she applied to offer more than a couple thousand per year for NMF. I would have pushed a lot harder, but her dad has the money to cover what isn’t covered by her 529 and he wants her to go where she wants to go, so… She has received excellent merit aid at the colleges she has heard from so far (all small liberal arts colleges know for strong merit aid). Congratulations to all who have heard! Congratulations to all who know where there kids will be going to college! We are still waiting on 4 regular decision colleges, so we won’t know for a while.

As of yesterday, the school has been radio silent including not replying to direct email inquiry. I am quite sure they received the certificates already. North Texas. Disappointing.

@KRR12345 I’m in OKC and my daughter’s letter is in the mail today. Look right above your post…someone in Austin is getting their letter today. Hopefully that means letter in the mail for you today, maybe tomorrow at the latest I would expect.

I know … just maddening that the school has had the certificates for days and can’t email, call, or give them out.

anyone in MA receive the certification yet ? We are in big public school and cc is useless, not hear from school yet, so maybe wait for home delivery.

My NMF son is considering FSU (Benacquisto) and Purdue (which has no substantial NMF program, maybe $500?). He was offered Presidential scholarship at Purdue, which is $10k/year. We are re-visiting both next week to help him decide. His chosen major (actuarial science) is only offered at a few schools, so many of the NMF full-ride schools were off his list. I expect Purdue will have to be extremely better to earn the extra cost – especially since we have told him that college is his cost/investment, not ours.

Has anyone from VA received a letter?

“The NM coordinator at USF spoke to us about the process at other instate schools (we are FL, obviously). She mentioned that FSU has a cap on their NM that they will name as scholars. I think she said it is 25. That is important because you are not actually eligible for Benaquisto unless you are named a scholar. Not sure how FSU chooses the 25, but it stands to reason that it might be a first come / first served kind of scenario meaning that getting your selection sent in the first round (March 1) could be vital.”

That sounds like a bit of misinformation, or a misunderstanding. There would be no reason for a cap at FSU for NMF Scholar designation, as the state is paying the Benacquisto to as many NMFs as FSU admits. Why would FSU limit the NMFs eligible for Benacquisto? Now, maybe one day the state caps it themselves, but in this recent budget they increased the funding for Benacquisto. There is a scholarship at FSU that is capped at 25, but that is Presidential Scholars, which is an extra award and separate program which has no relation to NMF or Benacquisto.

Just received my sons letter today in KY!!! So relieved - his school has their first ever National Merit Scholar!!! And yes crickets from his school. Lol. Oh well- we are extremely proud of him.

arghhh… nothing in informed delivery today. dallas tx area.

Just adding to what @vistajay posted, above, I just got off the phone with a scholarship officer at FSU. There is no cap on Benacquisto scholars at FSU. If it was offered to your kid along with admission, as long as he/she becomes an NMF, he/she gets the scholarship.
@ebearss1

@border1218 ; Same as you; nothing showing up in ID in North Dallas area.

Thanks @amsunshine . You saved us a call! I thought that had to be right though because there were no caveats in my daughter’s admissions/scholarship letters.

@border1218 @sibpuri Nothing from NM in informed delivery in Dallas either! Haven’t heard from our school.

Nothing in informed delivery today in SoCal. But it’s probably too early. Tomorrow or Saturday, hopefully. No word from D20’s school, either. But, she didn’t get a rejection letter, and we have no reason to believe she did not advance, so…keeping calm.

Is this FSU 25 NM cap really true? I don’t see how it’s possible FSU would give up the state money and the high stats students by refusing to pay $500 for each one after 25.

This would be a huge reason for the NM student not to choose FSU as first choice, they could give up full COA elsewhere and wind up with nothing at all. DS is NMF accepted at FSU and UCF, his first choice.
I would really like to know if this is true and why they would possibly do this. The student that selects FSU as first choice could be very sorry indeed if it is.

@CFLdad It’s not true. See @amsunshine post above.

@amsunshine Thanks, that was hard to believe.
I have two calls in to FSU but no response yet. I do have a question on your statement “If it was offered to your kid along with admission”. DS offered admission but nothing else as NMSF now NMF. (They did send stickers) Is that a possible oversight?

I’m in Bardstown, still no letter at my house, but the school received the certificate yesterday… hope you get news soon!

NMSC letter on USPS informed delivery in southern California today. Looks like it was sent first class and not bulk.
