@amsunshine , Benacquisto does not fund any summer activities. If you are OOS, FSU and probably other FL schools as well give their Benacquisto recipients in state tuition for summer school.
Update - DS just an email from his GC saying he could pick up his certificate on Friday so both letter home and confirmation from school on the same day.
Just received notification from our school today that my daughter advanced to finalist status - though no letter in the mail yet. If I understand correctly nearly everyone who completes the paperwork and isn’t in some kind of academic or behavioral trouble with the school will advance from semi to finalist, right?
I am already kicking myself for not finding this site sooner. There is so much I would have done differently. All 7 schools she applied to are RD. She has been accepted at U of M - Twin Cities with a nice renewable scholarship as well as an offer for an additional $1000/year as a NMS award.
It is my understanding that because we will not be able to make a first choice decision before the March 1 priority deadline, we could receive a one-time $2500 scholarship, no scholarship or ultimately be considered for the $1000 renewable one once she makes her college selection. Neither my husband or I work for any of the corporate sponsors listed. There are only 3 schools she is considering that are national merit sponsors (though UTD is making a compelling argument to go there). Hoping she can weed through all this and make the best decision both in terms of fit and finance.
@MamaFx3 March 1 is just the first round of mailings. You have until about April 30 to make a college first choice (they actually say up to May 31, but most colleges require your decision by May 1 anyway). So, it’s ok – you have time.
@3scoutsmom LOL – I was wondering the same thing. That mascot kind of gives me the creeps, but I guess I might have to get used to it if my D21 applies next year.
@amsunshine But if she gets selected for the $2500 scholarship she will no longer be eligible for the college-sponsored one, since it’s one per person, right? $2500 is awesome, but $4000 is even better!
I believe you can choose which one your child receives. For example, if your child gets awarded the $2500, but would prefer the greater award from the college, you would just choose the greater award and forfeit the $2500 from NMSC. At least, I think that’s how it works? I wonder if anyone else can confirm or deny?
No. just wanted to share the new grand rabbit! DD got married and the first thing they did after the wedding was adopt a rescue rabbit. His name is Nim (short for Nimrod from the Old Testament) and he’s a Flemish Giant mix. He’s now a very spoiled house rabbit. I’ve been told a ‘fur-baby’ is as close to a grandchild as I’m going to get until she’s out of grad school and has a “grown-up job”
If you’re on the UTD parent Face Book page you’ll see that we added muucav to our household so we are still paying homage to tobor, enarc and of course temoc!
I think the right thing is to check with the college.
I hope I understood this right back when we were given the info during our UTD visit. Note that this is UTD specific. I have no idea how it works elsewhere. If a student is offered $2500 by NMSC, then they should accept the offer. UTD will still provide them with merit scholarship but won’t “sponsor” the NMS award. If no NMSC offer is made, the student will get extra money from UTD and will be officially sponsored by them. From the student point of vied, the end result is almost the same.
If you look at this document (pg 40), you will see a list of colleges and a number of NMS attending any given college. You see that the total number of NMS can be higher than the number sponsored by the college itself
@“Mrs.WJB” —yes, we did the corporate application during junior year. PSAT taken sept/oct junior year. She received results Dec 2018/junior year. We knew her scores were really high, but we live in the two states tied for highest qualifying selection index, so we we by no means certain she would make NMSF. However, on the chance that she did, I went to the website to see how things worked. I noticed mention of corporate option, so both my husband and I checked with our companies. Mine did not offer one, but his did, so they led us through the process. That was the only way I knew. And it was due March of her Junior year.
Wow that timeline would make it difficult for the majority of NMF whose parents work at the company.
For kids who are not going to a school with NM scholarships and don’t have a parent who works for a company with NM scholarships, are they guaranteed the $2500 or do some walk away with just a pat on the back and a certificate?
@lkg4answers —they are not guaranteed. NMSC gives out about 7600 scholarships between the school, corporate, and NMSC sponsored scholarships. Those are the kids that become NM SCHOLARS. However, many schools have their own merit awards that are separate from NMSC school sponsored awards. For instance, my daughter applied to 8 different universities, and her merit went up another $20k-$160k (above the wonderful packages she had already been offered and total over the 4 years) at all but 2 or 3 of the schools once she was named NMF, and she has until the May 31 deadline to list the school she decides on as number one. At that point, the increased package deal becomes finalized
