Class of 2020 National Merit Discussion

Luke is the bomb diggity. We are in Texas and sometimes it does make it tough, but our DD LOVES it and it is a great school.

@Icky19 You will like the visits to UCf during the cold months of winter ! Its gorgeous

It is very comparable to the offers from UCF and UTD, my oldest daughter was a Red Raider and loved it. My youngest picked UCF.

This is probably a silly question but are there colleges that give scholarships for full or almost full CoA for NMF that are still accepting applications? I couldn’t convince my DS to submit a 16th or 17th application two months ago, but now the idea of an additional low-cost option is appealing.

@jgladney UTD: https://honors.utdallas.edu/nmsp

@jgladney UCF is also still accepting applications, but the Honors College there has a March 31 deadline, so be aware.

@jgladney : Both USF and FSU accepts applications till 3/1

University of Alabama probably accepts too.

I’m going to disagree with @amsunshine on her answer. If a sponsor college says you have to designate them by a certain date, you have to follow their process to get their award. Now, that doesn’t necessarily eliminate other schools because you can change your first choice school again. If in doubt, check with the schools.

@jgladney Check to see if the schools are rolling admission. Also, the school should be a match in terms of location, major, and atmosphere.

@Reebtoor Absolutely – I should have qualified my answer about that. Each college may have a date at which they want you to designate, so one would definitely have to check with the college. I only wanted to clarify that for competitive scholarships like Fordham’s, it is the college, and not NMSC, that offers the scholarship. Designating Fordham as 1st choice does nothing to get you their scholarship offer.

I also have similar question as @Rebooter. For instance BU wants you to designate them as first choice by 3/1. Let us say we do that and BU offers $25 K/year scholarship as advertised. Now, can we change it to another college after BU made that offer? The letter from NMSC seems to indicate that once an offer from a college is mailed, we cannot change college designation after that. Thoughts?

We’re contemplating buying annual passes to Universal. DD might get sick of us visiting

@tnknes That is a slightly different question. You are talking about your kid changing his/her mind after designating and accepting a scholarship offer. (The question before was relating to a situation where the college did not offer the scholarship despite a first choice designation.) Your hypothetical presents a more difficult situation and may well involve the forfeiture of any NM-related college scholarship. But if you were in that situation, it would probably behoove you to speak with NMSC and the university to see what the possibilities are for your kid.

On the other hand, does BU require designation by 3/1? Does any sponsor college/university require designation by 3/1? I have not heard of any, but perhaps there is a sponsor college out there that does this.

eta: I just checked and saw that BU does require designation by 3/1. Yuck, that does present a sticky situation. I would call NMSC to see what your kid’s options are and if he/she will have time to switch before the 5/31 deadline.

Boston College requires you name them as your first choice by 3/1

Ew. Glad my kid didn’t apply to either of those.

BU doesn’t release their regular admission decisions until after 3/1. They expect you to list them as #1 before being guaranteed admission? Sounds fishy.

Yes, it’s almost like they are putting NM applicants into a type of ED situation where you commit before seeing decisions/aid packets from all schools. Not good.

@amsunshine - thanks. Will talk to NMSC and share their response here. I read the letter from NMSC again and it looks like the college sponsored scholarships will be mailed out starting 5/1. Perhaps we can change designation before 5/1 to avoid an unwanted scholarship from being mailed out?

You can shift your first choice college after BU (or whatever other college specifically requires that early deadline) indicates it received the NM list with your student’s name on it. Their big $$ scholarship is not the official NM scholarship referenced in the NMSC letter. However, once those go in the mail, that’s the only one you can receive. But BU/USC/Furman’s big $$ “NMF” scholarship is a separate deal that you have to definitely meet their requirements for.

Someone else referenced that if you receive a NM college-sponsor scholarship (the $2000-$2500 size gicen by the college & not the NMSC) that you are definitely a Scholar & qualify for the Benaquisto. I’m not sure that is true if you do not attend the college that offered you that scholarship. But, I don’t know for sure.

When in doubt, call the college or NMSC. The people at NMSC are amazingly friendly. They will also tell you that most of what you read on the internet is misleading.

I think it makes sense that the student must attend the Florida sponsor college that offered the scholarship.

For those of you still waiting, Houston, here. After going two weeks, finally called school this morning to hear that son qualified and JUST received letter in mail this afternoon. Thank you all for posting that non-qualifiers were notified a couple of weeks ago, that was the only thing that kept me sane this weekend!
