If your child was awarded the $2500 NM Scholars award, when abouts should it get to their college?
At long last, I think my kid got nothing.
@silverpurple Where did your D20 commit?
Still not sure. MIght be deferring.
@silverpurple There is still time (until the May 31st deadline) if one of the colleges your D20 is considering is a college sponsor. It might be a small amount, but it’s something – and it will come with the “scholar” status attached.
I’ll answer my own question, my daughters National Merit Scholars scholarship just showed up in her financial aid list for her college.
Question for those who received college sponsored scholarships: do those show up in the NMSC portal or not?
@amsunshine. It shows up in my kid’s NMSC portal like this:
“4) We have received your reply to your scholarship offer. Click here to review the terms of your offer.”
OK, so my D needs to reply to her offer before it shows in the portal? I’m asking because we see a letter in informed delivery today, which we are expecting to be the scholarship notice, but we didn’t see anything in the portal yet.
@amsunshine. We never received anything in snail mail. After my son set his first-choice college, then I remember he showed me an acceptance confirmation on his NMSC portal that he checked to accept the scholarship a few days later and that was it … no printed letter involved.
Hmm. That’s interesting. OK, we will wait to see the letter.
The letter in the mail today was confirming your first choice and reminding you to indicate a first choice if you haven’t by the school’s deadline. It also said your certificate was sent to your principal which, in my opinion, was inconsiderate in a year when kids aren’t at school. If they were going to send the letter, they should have sent the certificate as well.
@lkg4answers Yes, the letter was anti-climactic, to say the least. D20’s school gave her the certificate of merit back in February, I believe. Did your D’s school not give her hers?
My daughter was a NM Scholar, her certificate came in the mail today. It actually said that they notified schools but sent it to the house because of the situation this year.
I was coming here earlier today to ask about timing of college awards and saw the 5/16 discussion, so I went to check the mailbox. My daughter got the letter today informing her she wasn’t selected for an award directly from National Merit, confirming her first choice college, and saying that the Finalist certificate was sent to her principal in February.
Then just a bit later today, she got an email from NMSC notifying her that she received a NM scholarship through her selected college. (Yay! We had expected it, but it is good to get the official notice!)
Btw, we did not receive the certificate from D20’s school back in Feb. I think her high school saves them for the end of year award ceremony. I’m guessing that they will still do some end of year awards and then mail any certificates or hand them off if/when the seniors end up getting to pick up any honors cords or stoles for their caps and gowns. They don’t officially graduate until mid-June, so we still have time for that.
That’s too bad that some schools save the certificates until the end of the year?. My D20 received the college sponsored scholarship email this morning. The letter on Saturday seemed unnecessary but maybe it was mostly for those who haven’t made their first choice yet?
My daughter also received an email regarding her college sponsored award today and it is more than we were expecting it to be. Very pleasantly surprised!!
Hmmmm…my daughter did not receive the NMF Scholar ($2500) money, but the school to which she has committed has already put NMF money in her financial aid package as they had been notified in April that they were her first choice college. Is there something else she still has to do?
@OH2020MOM If the NMF money is already included in her award, I wouldn’t think so. Not being sure how the college sponsored awards worked, we figured we’d wait and see if it just “showed up” in her college portal after she listed the college as her first choice. The notification from National Merit was a bit of a surprise. I wonder if it depends on the college if they work through the NMSC to make an award? In our case, we still haven’t heard anything from the college itself but I expect we will now that she’s accepted the award with NMSC.
@OH2020MOM What school is it? In our case, it showed up on the college financial aid portal but NMSC also sent an email asking for us to long onto the NMSC website and officially accept the scholarship. Not sure what would have happened if we didn’t.
