Class of 2020 (sharing, venting, etc)

Getting pretty nervous after my Pace rejection since I’m seeing so many people getting callbacks…any other Pace rejections? Am I just not good??

@Autmlvs615 Ahhhh I see! I never got an email from them so thats confusing.

@BalletPotter Don’t worry about Pace…it is kind of an oddball program. Their schtick is ultimately taking one of every type and they tend to lean toward extremes. Unless you are extreme in some way, shape or form they are likely going to pass. Some may make it through the prescreen, but won’t be chosen in the end – you’ll see when this all shakes out! Keep your head up…it all works out in the end! Right everyone!!!

@shopforpunky Thanks for the morale boost. I had hoped the purple streaks in my hair would help me stick out as “edgy” and “radical feminist” but oh well. My CCC acceptance came so I have somewhere to go

Hey bravo @BalletPotter!!! Omg what a huge relief! We did not have ANY acceptances at this point last year. You are a riot…good try with the streaks, etc. I think there may have been a plethora of streaked gals auditioning, lol! Never mind…onward and upward!

Thanks so much! Yeah it has been crazy so far… it doesn’t feel real to be honest! And who? I probably knew him!

That major change suggestion sounds a lot like what Syracuse said when they rejected me for MT. Ithaca also gave me a redirect but for acting. I think it’s total BS how certain schools lead on kids like that… sorry you and your son had to deal with that!

All this BW stuff is insane… after a few rejections I added them onto my list but they definitely don’t seem like the type of program I’d like to be a part of. We’ll see what happens.

Big city. Small sphere LOL. Best to you and your lovely DD, and happy holiday to the whole family! Hopefully we can run into each other at NYC Unifieds.

@BalletPotter Don’t let Pace get you down. Last year my S auditioned for 15 programs. He was accepted to 13, wait listed for 1 and rejected by 1. His lone rejection - Pace! Just be you and you will find a great spot.

¡Feliz Navidad y Prospero Año Nuevo! Hoping lots of dreams come true for the Class of 2020 and all the kind people on this forum. Blessings.

Thank you to all who share their experience and encouragement on this thread! Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

Hey everyone. Now since the holidays are winding down unifieds, where I’m doing almost all of my auditions, are just around the corner. I was wondering what people wear to auditions. There’s lots of discussion about girls dress code but I was wondering what the majority of guys do. For pants, jeans seem to casual but like black dress pants seem a bit too formal. Maybe khakis or a similar formality type? As for shirts do people wear sweaters or casual button down shirts. These detail-y logistics are probably are probably meaningless in the long run but now unifieds seems so soon.

@ParachuteBoy Last year, when my son had his college auditions, he wore the same clothes to all his auditions and callbacks. For the dance portion he wore black jazz pants and a heathered burnt orange crew neck tee; for the songs and monologues he wore a pair of black khakis, a casual blue button down shirt with a plain black tie…no jacket. He kept the sleeves of the button down shirt rolled up to about his elbows…so it looked casual…but in a relaxed formal sort of way. The blue shirt had like a denim blue color…but was a dress shirt. I hope that helps.

Thank you! I’ve noticed solid colors or a non-intense pattern seem to be a good idea. I think what I’m going with is quite similar to what your son used although I’m on the fence about a tie or not. Maybe it depends on the person if it’s fitting for your look and if you’re comfortable in it.

My advice is show some personality. Sometimes the kids all look the same. For boys, we saw a ton of khaki pants and jewel tone (especially blue) shirts, some ties, some not. For girls, it was a ton of jewel tone jersey dresses and nude heels. My D wore combat boots with a dusty blue lace dress. She was comfortable. It showed a little of her style, and she didn’t look like all the other girls out there. We saw one girl dressed very '50s. She was adorable, and it was her. Don’t try to be something you’re not, but if you have a nice pair of pants or shoes that are different and make you feel confident, go for it. The most important thing is to be comfortable and confident. I think one of the things that irks the audition panels the most is girls who can’t walk in heels, yet wear 3"-4" heels. Don’t do that. It doesn’t help.

JMU & CNU auditions mid-January…come on get here alreadY!!! JMU has been my D’s top choice and the wait seems so long! Now that holidays are over, back to prep prep and more prep!

@ParachuteBoy - your assessment is spot on. Wear what feels right for YOU. I’d stay away from khaki colored pants and “blue” shirt if possible, but if that’s your “look” and it makes you feel at ease, go for it. For my S’s auditions two years ago he wore Express dress pants in an “off-black” color (deep burgundy, steel grey, etc) and an Express dress shirt in a somewhat “wow” color, sleeves rolled up with a tie and black dress shoes. But that’s who HE is, and he actually wore that stuff to high school. As a college sophomore he’s “upped” his game to a geometric patterned shirt, still with a tie and has been known to wear red dress pants - again that’s who he is. During his audition year we saw boys in nice jeans and t-shirts and they looked great. Many of the “experts” on this forum would say they do not pay attention to the clothing - other than if it’s too sloppy, or in the case of girls, it reveals too much and shoes you can’t move gracefully in - and would say wear what makes you comfortable and that you can easily move around in.

Do NOT wear jammie pants or sloppy sweats with rude t-shirts for the dance call. It’s OK if you don’t have “real” dance clothes, but do your best to look like you want to be there. Wear clothes that are at least somewhat form-fitting, are comfortable and if you wear baggy shorts, make sure you’re not flashing your “parts” if you need to do some high kicks (maybe compression wear underneath). Jazz pants are great and you’ll soon be needing multiple pairs. Boys, if you don’t already have one, it might be time to invest in a dance belt.

We have heard that girls should not wear a very short dress with very high heels because they can’t take direction in clothes like that – suppose you’re asked to sit on the floor while you do your monologue? The suggestion I heard was that if you wear a dress, wear leggings with it so that, if necessary, you can move and act. Also a wise choice if the weather should be cold and windy. An audition is not a recital, and the very dressy look isn’t appropriate. That’s what we were told, anyway, and it makes sense to me. Of course, I have a boy, so none of this applies to us

Thanks for all the advice. @mom4bwayboy Why stay away from khaki pants and blue shirt? Is that just too cookie cutter. Do you think jeans are formal enough to wear with a navy shirt? And, dress shoes might be too much paired with that. I am trying to avoid dressing like I’m going to a band/choir concert or a recital.
