Any thoughts or insight on the University of Alabama program?
@MTmom725 I had done a lot of research on that program and in my opinion it is very good. There is a HUGE presence on here under University of Alabama. The parents will respond quickly and also I was invited to their parent FB group, which helped link me to parents with MT students there. They were very helpful and answered my questions. My D wound up not applying bc of the distance and size but it sounds wonderful. And our friends D who goes there loves it and her pictures of the campus and sorority house are insanely beautiful.
@stage16mom - my D and her friend that is also going to Chicago Unifieds are in the same boat after we changed flights to get them to San Antonio for TMEA on Wednesday… hoping they can fit all of their auditions and any walk-ins that intrigue them into Sunday - Tuesday. (Congrats to your D on making All State!)
Congrats to your daughter too @WTXMom! Luckily, we had already planned for TMEA - her school choir was invited as an honor choir, so they were going to be there anyway. That will be one crazy week!
LOL, My 16 is not a MT candidate, stumbled on this thread trying to get info about when myithaca accounts go dead if you are denied. Back on page 37 @claire74 wrote a moving piece about being played by BW.
Just wanted to let you know that BW is a huge player and it is not just limited to MT candidates he is cheating on ya’ll with health majors too. BW wooed D16 hard, bought her lunch, gave her a private tour, sent her gifts, arranged “special” private meetings with LAX coaches, professors and even the Dean of the Music Conservatory (as D16 was one the fence about Music Ed or Pre-Physical Therapy). BW called and emailed regularly giving her contact information of his current lovers, helped her choose an audition repertoire should she decide to go the Music Ed route, he listened to her piano playing and told her she was very talented and would have no problem making the cut (well if only she would learn a Bach piece…) he even promised her a room in his nice new suite style dorm. In the end BW has invited D16 to join his harem.
Ultimately, D16 has told BW to take a hike, she knows her own worth, she wasn’t going to play his games and learn a darn Bach piece (her Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin and Debussy were good enough), She told BW that he didn’t meet her high caliber standards. Jerk! Hope that helps soothe the pain.
Yeah, know that BW wooes lots of kids and promises the world. Academically, there is a reason no one has heard of BW and considering not everyone can earn a full-time living as an Actor/Musician the core academics can ultimately be very important.
@labegg, Gifts? If I had known BW had a history of giving gifts, I would have guessed sooner that he wasn’t really serious about our relationship. But now I’m so over BW–sounds like all talk and no substance. Like one of those internet dates where the photo doesn’t match…
Speaking of Baldwin Wallace, does anyone know if piano is a requirement for MT’s if they audition on campus? My daughter doesn’t play at all but heard that when you audition, you are asked to play piano. Any help would be great. Thanks.
When my D auditioned 2 years ago - a “piano test” was part of every audition. We were told that it was not a determining factor in being accepted vs not. D does not play well - and when she finished they said “piano 1” and that was it.
What does someone do if they have no piano training at all. I can’t imagine they want you to just sit at the piano and do nothing. Do we tell them before we go? We’re making a trip from Los Angeles so its a big journey.
I think they called my D and asked if she wanted the placement test. If you don’t play, you can opt out which would put you in “Piano 1” or whatever the most basic class is… if you get accepted.
I remember them calling us too and my telling them that she didn’t have piano. Will that mean that she wont be asked at the audition to play? Has your D auditioned yet?
They asked me if I had a piece prepared and I said “No, I’ve been studying piano for two weeks.” Then they laughed and asked me to play a D major scale (which luckily I knew) and that was that… Piano 1 it was! It really doesn’t matter either way, we all have to take 2-4 semesters of keyboard here unless you test into private lessons right away. Almost all the freshmen start off at level 1 keyboard with the exception of the few that have studied at a younger age. It certainly doesn’t affect the audition. No stress.
Hi, just sharing that my daughter received her first official rejection from Penn State. We were disappointed because we really loved the program and people but what really upset me was the way the letter was written. Basically saying you are not talented! I feel that there is a much better way to let these kids down without being insulting!
@musicalmama, what did the letter say exactly? Whatever the language, I don’t think Penn State meant that your D wasn’t talented. As others have said/experienced, it is extremely competitive and so much more comes into play than just talent. Rejections do NOT necessarily mean your child isn’t talented.
After doing a lot of research Baldwin Wallace is still at the top of our list. While the first break up letter was bittersweet and amusing, I don’t think all the BW bashing is fair and people should keep in mind it is still a respected top tier MT program that turns out many amazing performers.
Sometimes the best way to deal with disappointment is to make a “joke” about it. I don’t think anyone here means to belittle the quality of their MT program. For S, despite being happy at his current program, BW is STILL “the one that got away”.
