Class of 2020 (sharing, venting, etc)

@MTheatreKid, I honestly think it has nothing to do with admission to the program, unless things have changed ( @16bars?)… The year my daughter applied, the audition confirmation suggested that she would have to take a theory test at the audition, but in fact she didn’t have to take it until she got to school the following Fall! So it had NOTHING whatsoever to do with admission and everything to do with placement.

Anyone else watching the seniors graduate with nerves? It means we have seniors and this game is officially ON yikes!

@mtmamma2020 Last year, when I watched the seniors graduate I was tearful. I’m pretty sure I cried over every graduation picture I saw posted. I was an emotional wreck. There was no way I was ready for this or could handle it. However, after audition season plus all senior responsibilities, I was too exhausted to be an emotional wreck. I shed a few tears, but nothing compared to last year. I’m thankful for those who told me to enjoy the ride and not just go through the motions or worry all the times. I would like to share that same advice with you.

Anyone looking for information on how to choose audition material might want to check out latest post on VoiceTeacher’s blog - auditioningforcollege dot com/2015/06/08/advice-from-musical-theatre-faculty/

@IfYouOnlyKnew Thanks for the kind words! Sometimes worrying about something is far worse than the actual experience – appreciate the note, thanks!

Looks like I’ll get to be an onlooker this next year. A couple of days ago, my daughter dropped the bombshell that she no longer wants to get a degree in MT. She’s been preparing for 4 years, already hired a coach, and is even headed to the TPAP intensive in about 10 days. I don’t even know what to do with myself now. It’s going to take a while for this to sink in. But I guess it’s better that she decides this now, rather than after we started paying tuition.

@stage16mom I’m sure that has to be quite a bombshell for you. I think it was courageous for her to tell you now rather than later. Sending you hugs!

I wouldn’t throw in the towel yet. It’s very possible being around all the kids at TPAP will renew her interest. If not, there are many ways to continue to participate and study theatre even if it’s not your major. Good luck to you both!

@evilqueen had a similar experience I believe, @stage16mom.

@stage16mom I would applaud her! I know several working actors/performers and they all say the same thing: if there is anything else you want to do in this world DO IT because this is a tough tough business. If her heart is not in it, then I applaud her and I am a teeny bit jealous… sometimes I wish my math strong kid chose to be an engineer…the pay is better! ps – im me, my d is going to tpap!!! She went last year and loved it. pps – she can also do plenty of theater in college without majoring in it, I sure did!

Yes, i had this exact experience last August. Please feel free to message me. I was shocked and devestated at first and now i am thrilled with her school and her choice.

Sending hugs @stage16mom. Some our kids, who are so “sure” now, will undoubtedly be jumping the tracks in the future. Better they follow their hearts than be railroaded into a place that doesn’t feel right.

@MTheatreKid, I don’t believe Montclair State did a full music theory test at the audition. I believe they only just touched on it…as @Calliene said just for placement purposes. They did, however, test my S on his vocal range…down to the very bottom of his low range and then up through his mix the point of change over into his head. They did not go to the top of his head voice, though…just to the changeover. Hope that helps.

I must admit my heart skipped a beat when I saw this thread had been started and realized that it’s my daughter’s class–wow. I’ve been reading a lot, posting just a little, and now the time is just about here. I’m excited, but nervous at how it’s all going to go. We have a ways to go on firming up “the list,” and I’m sure I’ll be looking to all of you for advice in the coming year! I was going to ask when colleges usually open up their audition dates, but read on this thread that it’s sometimes as early as July? It’s very comforting to know that we’re all in this together

Anyone waiting on ACT scores? Our were delayed today…ugh good practice for all the waiting next year!

Is it too late to do the whole “introduce yourself” thing? I had seriously an entire thing typed out, but it got deleted and is going to take more than the 15 minute editing period, so…

Okay, second try: I’m a rising senior (obviously.) I’m interested in BAs, as I want to double major in psych. I have great test scores, average GPA. I’ve been heavily involved in theatre since 7th grade, with experience in nearly every area of thestre, from acting to directing to being on running crew to dramaturging (which isn’t a word, but I needed to keep the gerunds going haha!) In the past, I’ve tended to play sort of quirky, not quite ingenue and not quite character roles (Chrissy in Hair, Little Red in Into the Woods, Laurie in Brighton Beach Memoirs, etc.) Acting is my strongest area, with singing close behind, and dancing a few laps behind in the race hahah! I only have a few auditions, so this year is going to be easier on me than many of you, I’m sure! Nevertheless, I’m very excited to be going on this journey with you all!

HI! No long thing needed

Hi everyone! I’m going to go ahead and introduce myself after months of lurking, as I’m sure I’ll need as much support as I can get in this crazy world of college auditions that I’ll be getting myself into in a few months!
I’m a mezzo/belter and I’ve been involved in performance ever since I can remember. Some of the roles I’ve played in the past are Heidi in [title of show], Ariel in The Little Mermaid, Little Red in Into the Woods, and Ti Moune in Once on this Island (I’m white, but the production I was in was unable to do the traditional casting). My strongest point is probably either my dancing or my acting, but I think overall the three are probably pretty equal. I’m an above average student and in , so I’m hoping that can help with scholarships and such, because I mean who doesn’t love getting money for college?? I’m interested in BFAs, but what I want is a very musical theatre focused program with great dance training (well great training in everything, but dance is more important to me than it may be to others), ideally with the possibility of doubling majoring in something psych related (call me crazy, but I love to learn and would really love to be able to do this, so if it’s even the slightest bit possible I’ll make it happen, but I know it’s almost impossible so I can live without it haha). Currently my list is super long and desperately needs to be narrowed down, but some of my top choices right now are CCM (this is a reach, but I’m in a school-year long intensive program and I love it, plus in state tuition is a wonderful thing haha), Ball State, Northwestern, IU, Penn State, Wright State, and NKU.

I apologize for the lengthiness of this post! I’m really excited to go on this journey with all of you!

I assume since you have in-state tuition for CCM you are in Ohio? Make sure you check out Otterbein (MT with dance concentration major), Baldwin Wallace and Ohio Northern as well. Close by in Kentucky, Western Kentucky has MT with a strong dance program too. Thought this article about dance programs might be of interest to you and give you some other ideas of schools to consider:http://zoomtens.com/check-out-the-10-best-colleges-for-dance-performance-in-the-us/
