Dusing2 - does the 1 year of companion flights start the day you reach 110K, or can you start it anytime? I’d love to be able to include the move-in flight as well. So Sept to Sept would be great - or even Oct to Oct. I love SWA too - 2 checked bags for free, and no charge for flight changes!
It is for two years. But it starts in January of the year that you reach the 110,000 miles. So if you get it now it will be good through December of 2016. If you google SWA Companion pass you can get lots of info about it from several forums and also from SWA.
You can also reassign the person you take as the companion (I think you can do this up to 3 times per year). So after the kid goes to college you can switch it to your spouse or another kid to use for college visits.
@Dusing2 Brilliant. Thank you for the tip!
We have a firm 16 on D’s list. Three have prescreens. I have no idea how we are going to manage having her audition at all of them, but I’m going to stay positive it will all work out in the end. She has three schools that are her “favorites,” so I’m hoping/praying/etc that one of those will come through.
You’ll manage, @songgirlsmom , and you’ll likely have fun doing it! We did! I assume you’ll be attending Unifieds? My D went to both NY and Chicago Unifieds, which was great. Just one would be good, though, too, and knock out a lot of auditions! (Most people attend one, not two.) Just try to keep her healthy during audition season no matter where she auditions.
I’d try not to worry too much about those favorite schools. (Easier said than done, I know.) You both may be surprised as other programs move up higher on her list and others fall down lower throughout this process.
Yeah I have 30+ schools on my list down and I want to cut it down to under 20
Its really difficult to cut down by “what you want” when in reality the main question is where we can get in!
Have a safety that you love and you can reduce the number of schools dramatically <3
Having a safety is a great idea, and should be something everyone does. We also included a school that my kid absolutely loved that did rolling admissions and did that audition in November so we had the decision by early December. That took a lot of pressure off knowing my kid could go to a school that was high on our list.
Another great way to audition for lots of schools is to use Mary Anna Dennard as a coach. She has her own Moonified auditions over a weekend in November where you can easily audition for 10-20 schools. Several of those will also send decisions in December or early January. Being able to audition for so many schools at one place in a weekend easily offsets the cost of using an audition coach. I think Dave Clemmons’ students also attend Moonifieds.
Anyone else taking the ACT this weekend? Hoping to avoid fall testing
My D is taking ACT on Saturday. She took it once in the spring. Her score was OK, but we both think she can do better.
My D is taking it Sat. too, this will be her first ACT. We were notgoing tot ake any of these tests during final season but Guidance counselor suggested she go in cold and see how it goes, so she only has two weeks of study in.
@Dusing2 , regarding the Moonified college auditions, “Several of those will also send decisions in December or early January”
Do you know which schools those are?
Hey guys I’m new here! I’m a junior going into this crazy audition process for my chance at a BFA in Musical Theatre and I couldn’t be more excited/nervous/scared. I’ve been making my list of which schools I want to apply to ever since my freshman year and as of right now the list consists of
-Montclair State
-Roosevelt CCPA- Voice Emphasis
-Ithaca
-CCM
-Point Park
Right now I have a 3.45 GPA and a 1720 on the SAT(retook it and I’m waiting for results) I’m an 5’11 African American classically trained Baritone. I would definitely consider singing to be my strongest asset with acting second. I’m more of a mover as I’ve never had any formal dance training. As for my type I can’t really tell you as the roles I’ve been cast in are all over the place from Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka to Oliver Warbucks in Annie to Albert in Bye Bye Birdie (if you can figure that out please help me lol). I’ve researched all the programs on my list and have fallen in love with what I have seen from each school and I hope to visit them soon! I was just wondering if you think that I would be the right performer for these schools based on what they usually look for (don’t hold back please)as well as any advice for a hopeful BFA MT! Thanks for your help!
@Notmath1 - my daughter went to Moonfieds, got a yes from Wright State in December, a “we like you” letter from Rider in January (got a yes in beginning of March on her portal), and a yes letter from Point Park in January.
Hi, @MTheatreKid, first of all congrats for getting a jump on this process, and kudos for posting here! My belief is kids who do their own research have a leg up and are to be greatly commended!! My daughter goes to Montclair, so if you have any questions, please ask. It is a great program, and if voice is your strength, you’ll be happy to hear that the voice teachers (and music department in general) there are awesome. As are the acting teachers! And if you don’t dance now, you will by the time you finish there! Lucky for you though the dance is leveled and so you start out with other “movers” and move up as your proficiency level increases. All the programs you listed are wonderful, so good luck to you as you begin the journey!! Welcome to CC!!!
Hey @MTheatreKid welcome to this process! My opinion on those schools is to go for it. The thing about college auditions is that we almost never know what they are looking for. Perhaps a school on your list has already accepted a 5’11" African American baritone and don’t another one, or perhaps they would love to have two. A lot of programs know who they want before the process as well, so the best thing is to take advantage of what YOU can control and sell yourself. Don’t worry about being a type for a school, focus on why you think the school would fit you.
RE the ACT; I am taking it this saturday again also. This will be attempt 3 for me. I got a 32 last time, which I’m okay with, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to retake and shoot for a 34. Kind of wish I had studied more, but we shall see. Maybe I can squeeze some more in this week.
@Calliene @attheballet thank you for the warm welcome and advice guys! Calliene I do have some questions about Montclair. Although they say that the music theory test is only for placement do you believe that it has some effect on admission to the program?
