Yes, that’s also why I avoided CMU and NYU and made a realistic list for myself (besides the reach of Michigan). I have a lot of music theory experience through my choir program, and I am literally willing to work harder than ever to pursue this for the rest of my life.
I’m in a similar situation. My gpa is slightly below yours and I have the same act score. A lot of schools told me they will wait to make academic decisions until they can see 1st semester transcript. And I did much better this than I have before since my grades were bad so I’m hoping that’ll help.
Just to clarify though, CMU essentially puts little to no weight on your gpa/act for theatre applicants. However, a lot of people, myself included, put it off the list because you sort of still need great scores to get enough scholarships since it’s crazy expensive. They do claim to meet 83% of finical needs though.
Yeah, that is exactly why I took CMU off my list. It’s not necessarily the academic aspect, it’s the cost. Too expensive for me. Same with NYU. Michigan is in state and I know a lot of people there, my directors at my high school are MT’s at Mich and I just know it’s an amazing program. I figured I’d give it a shot. I totally feel you as I’m in the same boat academically, It’s awesome to know I’m not the only one.
I figured you were aware of that with CMU. But I just wanted to clarify that because CMU is generally a very high acclaimed academic university. It would be frustrating to be admitted somewhere and not be able to afford it, especially s place like CMU. There are definitely plenty of other people who didn’t do well in school. Some program heads, like the at Michigan, believe that having great academic stats is vital to theatre while others don’t like lessening their net for applicants and don’t care for the limitation. Why does every school have to be so different…
I do regret not being extremely studious. If I had a high gpa and act there are probably plenty more schools I wish I could be applied to.
Any thoughts on mt schools where sat scores don’t matter that much?
Some schools don’t require ACT or SAT. Montclair State and Columbia college both have it as optional. I’m sure there are other MT schools that are the same but those are two popular, and for at least Montclair, well regarded. Most of the time you can definitely make up for a low test score with a higher gpa. Other than schools like Northwestern, You’ll be fine so I wouldn’t panic.
Ithaca and Juilliard are also test optional schools.
Point Park is now test optional, as well and really not a hard academic admit at all.
CCPA Roosevelt isn’t test optional, but it is REALLY not focused on grades/test scores.
Wagner is test optional.
Wow had no idea about some of these schools bring test optional. Keep the ideas coming ! Just keeping some ideas in mind since D does not test well …however wonder if you are not able to get any money from the school then or if they will still give you money based on your GPA etc
My daughter got a huge scholarship at Wagner without submitting test scores. Of course you should check with each school.
@theatrework - I posted SAT data for about 80 schools with MT programs in your SAT Help! thread from lowest to highest:

So @EmsDad can I just hire you to come live with us for the next year?
For those who are considering teaching as well as MT, NYU Steinhardt offers a combined BM degree (vocal performance–MT or Classical) and an MA in Music Education as a dual-degree 5 year program.
http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/music/education/programs/dual
I’m not sure what other programs offer this option, but it is something to consider. It would allow someone to get certification to teach K - 12 and possibly on a university level as well.
Younger D is graduating NYU with a BFA in studio art. She will be continuing there to get her MA in Art Education–which will give her that K - 12 certification to teach art. She will be able to get that degree in about 10 months, attending school January term and Summer 1.
Down the road she would like to pursue an MFA in sculpture so that she can teach at a university as a professor. I’m hoping that if she gets a teaching job that some of the cost of the MFA will be covered by her school or district as professional development. It has been recommended that she waits to pursue her MFA for a period of time so that she has some more exhibitions and professional experience under her belt.
MT D was advised to do the same if she wanted her Masters in MT/ Music. Best to get some professional experience if one wants to be hired to teach at a university.
@theaterwork check with each school, although some are test optional, they still require scores for scholarships. So check each one.
I did not know that about the BM/MA Ed combo at Steinhardt. That does sound like a great program. We are done applying but thank you for posting.
I posted a question over on the CCM sub-topic as it was school specific and figured more appropriate there, but if anyone here has auditioned for CCM so far this year- would love for you to give me some insight if you have any! Thanks!
@stagedoormama D auditioned and was accepted last year. Feel free to pm me.
Just here to vent.
Ugh, I got rejected from kenyon today. All my grades were fine except for 3 from second semester junior year.
I was a recruited athlete and if they had been b’s I would have gotten in.
I also retook the courses and held a 4.0 fall semester to show I knew the stuff(took 9 courses in the fall). 6 of them were ap classes.
Why can’t they overlook 3 grades which my counselor explained and were not entirely my fault? I did the work, I aced the tests… Why can’t they understand it was an accident that ruined my chances.
Ughhhhhhh
Earlham is still a kick ass school to go to though, at least they understood…
