Class of 2020 (sharing, venting, etc)

@craz4mtsmom my D was also disappointed with the accompanist at Ball State. She did not ask for tempo notes at all and just started playing. My D carried on but felt that it was not her best. I hope they heard her potential because she really likes the school and program.

D also had a very good walk-in with University of Minnesota - Duluth. They were really positive and have already sent her an email encouraging her to apply for a scholarship and to the school. I did not know about their program before and I now realize that they audition the students at the end of Freshman year for the BFA MT program. Any feedback would be appreciated. I am thinking that this might be a good safety option.

I usually don’t post on the MT site as my D chose VP after auditioning many years ago. But someone mentioned something on the music thread about MT…so instead of working I dropped in!

I’ll make a comment on UMN-Duluth as I doubt there will be many who will comment on it. I’m from the Twin Cities. I’ve always been surprised by the talent that comes out of UMN Duluth. I’m glad they are out recruiting more. I think that’s newer.

Talent comes out of this program. I see many of the these students working in the Twin Cities which is a great place to be a working artist. It’s affordable and has a tight-knit, well-respected theater community. Of course people move on to other areas of the country but many hone their skills here.

Here are a few theatre/names to look up. Top theatres I’ve seen graduates of UMN-Duluth are: Guthrie Theatre, Theatre Latte Da, The Children’s Theatre Company and Chanhassen Theatre. One of their more “famous” graduates who is always in shows here (and in NYC) is Cat Brandisi.

Note Duluth can be a bit chilly! But Duluth has taken on a very cool vibe. We went up there last summer for a short vacation to hang out, hike along Lake Superior and take in some good music. It’s call the Scandinavian Riviera!

I hope this helps you.

@bfahopeful Thanks, do you know if it’s the same for MT?

I think it is, plus the songs required. They have audition requirements on their website if that helps, too.

Okay so has anyone heard of any acceptances from: USC, Chapman, Pace, Emerson, UCLA, The New School, Otterbein, CalArts? I heard back from Marymount manhattan and got into their BA Performance but they never mentioned anything about their BFA? If anyone knows of any acceptances or knows when they will send out decisions let me know! i Just got back from Chicago unifieds and i thought i had down really good but i’m just so nervous!

@rz1997, here is a thread with last year’s notification dates and methods
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/1745374-2015-mt-notification-dates-methods-p7.html

The above notifications are for those who got accepted, correct? How wil we find out about other results (wait list or rejection, whatever else)

There was a waitlist thread. Disclaimer: things change from year to year and there are many exceptions to rules that really don’t exist

@bfahopeful thanks. I didn’t see time limits on the website, just that two contemporary monologues were required. Maybe I’m just missing something!

it may have only been listed for the acting page. Good luck!

Emerson had some acceptances from their early auditions. Pace won’t notify anyone until mid-March. Did you get into Marymount’s BA Theater Performance with the MT minor? That’s how most of the MT kids are accepted, a handful then are allowed to do the BFA with the MT minor, but it requires a bunch more credits and sometimes means doing January term or having AP credits that transfer. Don’t know about the other schools you asked about.

I’m not doing MT. I’m just BFA acting ! I got into their BA acting performance but they never mentioned my BFA audition ? Was that the nice way of telling me I got rejected?

ALSO: for anyone who auditioned for CHAPMAN my friend told me that she was notified yesterday. 2/12 that she was accepted into the BFA Screen acting, so decisions will be coming out soon!

@theaterwork we both really liked Belmont. The school is beautiful and the fact that it is Nashville def has some perks. The audition process was long you were assigned a time slot for vocal and directly after you were taken into another room to do your dance audition that YOU have to choreograph. Thought this was interesting no other school has done this. In addition at the end of the day there was a dance call which they stated was solely for placement. The Dean of music (imagine Paula Dean) spent a lot of time talking with us and even answered individual questions. There were students auditioning for various programs that day commercial voice, different instruments, ect. My D met kids auditioning for all kind of things not just MT. They hold all their auditions on campus which def makes it more selective because you have to be able to get to Nashville. There was a student panel Q&A which was also very informative and out of the 6 students 2 were MT majors. 1 was a senior and he was very informative, The accompanist did play my D’s song too fast but not much you can do about that it happens more often than it should. Overall i really like Belmont and am hoping for a spot for my D!

@SongnDanceMom yes Ball St was not my D’s best either she actually felt it was off to such a bad start she asked her to start again. Not the best scenario but she felt it was her best option for having any chance of them hearing her. It is unfortunate because she loved their dance call! Good luck to your D I am keeping my fingers crossed for mine too. While were there they asked a girl to sing another song they did not ask my D to do that :frowning: who knows, my D’s coach is very successful and has said that when she was going through this process she had auditions that she thought were awful and got an offer and auditions she thought were great she got none. You just never know!

Worst audition experience–Rushed into vocal audition two minutes after dance call ends, then an auditor pulls out his phone and texts right as first song begins…Not classy. This unnamed school was in the middle of my son’s list and has now been struck off!

@craz4mtsmom @SongnDanceMom My D had a good audition (loved the faculty and school has probably moved up on D’s list) but she also had a notable experience with the aforementioned accompanist, as did at least 2 others my D spoke with later in the weekend. Another example of ‘be prepared’ for unique personalities in the audition room, and do the best you can. Not every school has the “this is your audition” mentality.

@claire74 of 8 auditions, my D had her first lousy experience…also soon after a dance call…auditors appeared to be looking for something the entire time. First time my D has ever had a panel be so uninterested in her. A humbling experience that she won’t soon forget - but is channeling that energy into being even more determined.

I have so much admiration for these kids!!

Overall just to say we had a positive experience at Unifieds glad we went!

@craz4mtsmom, we had excellent experiences at Unifieds, too–all but one school. I highly recommend future students to attend Unifieds and make the most of it. It is an amazing opportunity to be seen by many schools. We had one outstanding walk-in experience at a top college, which would not have happened if we had not noticed the school at Unifieds. Overall, I got the strong impressions that the auditors give just as much attention to Unifieds candidates as they do to campus candidates. Also, I found that auditioning multiple times over three days gave the students a more relaxed attitude toward auditioning, which likely helped them perform better. I’m so glad we took advantage of this opportunity, rather than spend more money and time on campus visits.

^^ Couldn’t agree more. Unifieds was definitely overall a positive experience, and even the one not-so-positive one was great learning. After a little time to reflect, my daughter did say that she was glad the remainder of her auditions were on-campus, but glad to experience both. She probably enjoyed the social aspect of Unifieds more than anything!
