Thank you so much @austinmtmom I really appreciate the info. I’ll look into the PT major, but I do see your point. I would love to hear more about it as you find out!
@mspamela, also check out Northern Colorado! My daughter’s friend went there so she could graduate with no loans!
You might want to talk to @sydsim. Her D is a rising sophomore PT major at CCU. She can give you the inside scoop on the program. My D was an MT major who graduated in 2014. But I will definitely pass along anything I hear!
Hi I’m here! (Thanks @austinmtmom ).
Yes my D is a rising sophomore PT major and we have found the program to be fabulous! My D is an actress, dancer, singer, musician, gymnast and had studied circus arts so PT was a perfect fit for her.
The PTs take Acting courses as well as dance, movement and of course physical theatre. Voice lessons are not included in their curriculum, but if their schedule permits (and there are open slots available), the PTs can take lessons for a fee. D’s roomie, also a PT major, took voice and piano lessons last year.
They are both excited to be spending their junior year in Italy being immersed in all things Physical Theatre. The PT instructor at Coastal studied at the school there so is well versed in the program.
And I agree, I would hate to see students try to get into the program unless they were truly passionate about it (opposed to using it as an MT substitute).
Oh and we all LOVE COASTAL!
@mspamela He ended up at Texas State. Final 3 were Texas State, CMU, Penn State.
I hope I didn’t imply that you should use Physical Theatre as an MT substitute at Coastal as a way to get in-state tuition. I just know it is a major not available at other schools so it does sometimes allow you to qualify for in-state tuition. Just something for aspiring actors to consider. We had never even heard of the major until we considered Coastal and were fascinated by it. It was not the major our D was considering. But the PT curriculum may be just what you are looking for.
@sydsim Best wishes to your D in Italy. We have friends who will also be in that program (so I’m guessing they are classmates of your Ds :)) We can’t wait to keep up with what you all are doing there via their social media posts. What a tremendous opportunity for Coastal students!

@mspamela , I also scoured each schools individual forum at the top of the MT page to see what aid they typically gave and to whom. (For example, boys sometimes get more aid at some programs.)
I’m sending you a PM about UArts.
wow @MTDadandProud your S ended up with some fantastic offers! Thanks again.
So the Common App came out a few days ago and unfortunately I can only use it for two of the 7 schools I’m applying to (5 being MT). Yay individual apps and essays
Hi everyone! Just joined this website and glad that I found this thread
I’m a rising senior, obviously, and short, white, and cis female. Seattle area. I consider myself primarily a dancer (8 years ballet and jazz, 2ish years tap and pointe). I sing mezzo but I’ve only been taking private voice lessons for year and a half (although I’ve been involved in shows and choirs for longer). I’ve been playing piano for 10 years and have strong music theory knowledge. Acting is my weak link but will be getting coaching on my audition monologues. I’m involved in a full IB program at school, 3.9 GPA, 2100 on my SAT. I’d love a BFA, but being able to take electives (in women, gender and sexuality studies and audio production or music technology) or even have a minor (audio production or music technology) is very important to me so BA is cool too. Being in a big city is extremely important to me. Current school list: University Washington, Roosevelt/CCPA-dance emphasis, Columbia College Chicago, Pace, NYU Steinhardt, Point Park, University of the Arts, Emerson, University of Miami, UCF, American University.
@mspamela We are also looking at VA schools as we are in Md. Our list includes a lot of yours . My D is only a junior though so now just making a school list and doing research.
@theaterwork you’re definitely on the right track by starting early! We started early but I already feel like we only did half of what we should have. Research as much as you can; go on as many visits as you can this year, before the crunch of senior year. You won’t regret it!
Hey @TheMTProject thanks for helping and mentoring! I had a question though, in my upcoming auditions I would like to sing a song an octave lower in order to show my range as a bass. My voice is much stronger in a lower range and was curious if it would be problematic in an audition? Also I’m struggling to find decent monologues for guys and an up-beat song in the classical musical song repertoire, any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
@College319, you’re quite welcome! There are occasions where transposition can be okay (as long as you have sheet music in the proper key), but I wouldn’t recommend singing a song an octave down, as it doesn’t demonstrate your castability in that role. I’m not comfortable making material recommendations as I’m not familiar with your type, but you’re right that finding great material for guys your age that suits such a low voice type could be difficult. I’ll send you a PM!
Hey guys – on being an RA, make sure to ask that question of the department. At BSU, my daughter was specifically told that she could not be an RA and in the BFA MT program. If this is a financial strategy, make sure to put that on your list of questions for the various departments.
So late to this party but wanted to wish all involved in this cycle the best of luck on this journey! I am sure that there is a more appropriate place to post this, but I just dropped D off at Viterbo University. So far, everything that we dreamed it would be. Parents, you will get through this and it will all make sense at the end. We left with such peace and the words of this blessing that we prayed over D in a ceremony right before we said goodbye, echoing in our heads. Gracious God, You blessed me with the gift of my child and entrusted me with her care. Now she leaves this home and begins a new life apart from me. Surround her with good people and watch over her daily. And let her know that I will always be near whenever she may need me. Heal any hurts we may harbor with one another and forgive our failings as we learn to be in a new kind of relationship with each other. And when the sight of her empty room pierces my heart with sadness, may I find comfort in knowing that my child is your child too, filled with your grace and sheltered by your love. Amen.
That’s a beautiful prayer. Thanks so much for sharing it, @TNMTDAD ! I needed it–as I’m sure most of us “2019ers” do right now, especially. (Although, my Mom told me today that it didn’t get much easier for her for a long time and that there’s always a part of that ache. Oh, dear.)
So by the looks of this nonactive thread there must be only a dozen or so kids auditioning for the class of 2020, so I feel that my D will get into a lot of schools. - lol. So since I actually had a dream last night about going to an audition with my D, I would come out of the woodwork and try to revive this thread and encourage anyone else to jump in. I have been reading for over a year, and am thankful that I have found this site. So grateful for all of the advice and feel that I am prepared to help my D this year due to all of you who have gone through it and shared their experiences so openly with everyone here. My D is a soprano with a pretty decent belt, a strong actor and a late comer to dance but has made huge strides in that area. We are looking at schools that are full universities and not straight conservatories. Of course we have the super reach schools like Michigan on our list but are being practical enough to have a diverse grouping and more than one safety cause as you all know, this is crazy!!! The hardest part right now is getting the prescreens done. We have most of the academic applications done, and a few sent even. Our plan is to get the prescreens recorded by first week of October. We have 3 non prescreen schools already schedule for auditions which makes us feel good just to have some on the calendar. The one thing we are stuggling with for our song prescreen is she has 2 different voice teachers and they have different emphasis and differ on their advice on what songs to use. A month ago my D was certain which songs she was using, but recently each teacher has expressed differing opinions on the songs chosen. ie - that’s too low for your voice, that doesn’t show your soprano, that one needs too much work still, while the other one says it sounds great. ugh. My D loves both of her voice teacher. We went from knowing exactly what to record to now being on the fence with less than 30 days to record date. Who should be choosing these songs? Should they be stretch songs - meaning showing your highest note and lowest belt? Or just strong songs ? What criteria have others used? From last years group, what would you have done differently or the same when it came to the prescreen song? Looking forward to travelling through this with the others on CC
About the voice teacher thing @momma2four we encountered this a few hrs ago and was told never a good idea to have 2 voice teachers. Too many opinions and styles of teaching. I know it’s not helpful to you now…but we had same problem.
