Nailing down the applications here. Really overwhelming due to the very (VERY) wide net being cast. Embarrassed to even say outloud how many. However, having read here for years and knowing the odds, I’m hesitant to trim the list so early in the process. YES- it’s getting “real”, real -fast. So anxious that it go well yet so much out of my/our control. Hoping that if she does enough right that it will go well. The goal is to be done with application by the end of September and then move on to taping pre screens. So many many details for each and every school… Yikes!
Yes @MTMHopeful we are also swamped in application processing and details… My D , however, has decided to bag prescreen schools and cut her list of schools. There were simply too many and she was utterly overwhelmed. We all were frankly. We still have an above average amount for college admissions but not as many as some on here I’m guessing. I sometimes try to add schools & she says no , that she’s good with her list…gotta let her take the lead here to some degree & pray for a good outcome from what we have.
We will have a hard enough time auditioning at the schools we have down anyway & we decided Unifieds wasn’t a good fit for us as most of her schools don’t go anyway & the few schools that do we will try to do on campus for them since they aren’t that far away.
It will be interesting to say the least how it all pans out …
Skipping the prescreen schools is absolutely tempting but a couple are at top of Ds list. Just hoping that low tech really doesn’t make a difference. I’ve seen pre screens posted on YouTube and I’m thinking that they are not all necessarily representative of what the schools see. The schools are pretty specific that you don’t have to spend a lot but still nervous about doing them ourselves. If I can save the cost of a professional I’d like to- all these fees add up fast.
@MTMHopeful, I’m sure ‘low tech’ doesn’t matter one iota, as long as the sound is good and visual is clear and steady. Even people who audition for professional shows don’t need a professional to film them. Good luck!
@MTMHopeful - we did low tech recording in our living room and D passed 8/9 prescreens, so as long as they can be seen and heard well, there is no need for pro equipment.
@MTMHopeful - same here - including a tap routine in our foyer! That one took several takes because we kept laughing! D passed all prescreens (3) and was excepted to MaryMount Manhattan with a video audition. All made at home with a friend playing piano and my husband as videographer. Please don’t worry about hiring pros!
D reports that she has submitted 4 applications-but no prescreens yet. Prescreens are definitely the thing that is stressing her out the most!
OK this is getting real! Is there a mother / daughter duo that is going to Moonifieds that would like to share a room with another mother / daughter. If so please PM me. Thanks!
@Mel2421 it does get real real fast. Have you asked your daughter about having a room mate for your first auditons? That wouldn’t have flown too well in my world. I think the audition season is too stressful to bring someone else into the mix. That being said everyone makes their own way! Break a leg!!
Our update: D has applied to several schools…school counselor thinks she is crazy…keeps telling her “you have plenty of time it’s ok” and doesn’t have certain forms we need…D entered recommenders in common app, only one response… Teachers saying " oh it’s ok you have plenty of time, I’ll get around to that at
Some point" …no one gets the audition date thing… how you must apply and get audition date…Like NO ONE. D’s friends think she’s a nut case…
No one gets that it might actually be nice to get paperwork crap out of the way NOW so we actually can just focus on stress of auditions! Plus might actually want to enjoy senior year!!! Aargh!!!
Oh … & if ONE more person tags me on FB with a link to the “best MT programs on the planet” list I am going to blow a gasket …
Most schools will let you schedule audition once your application is in – it doesn’t have to be complete. Meaning it is ok if letters of rec are not in or test scores. My D last year kept waiting because she thought her letters of recommendation had to be done to submit applications. I finally convinced her it was ok without them and she submitted and we got audition dates. She was able to send along letters or other missing pieces as needed.
The only piece that had to be done to apply was the essay as that is part of the application
@theaterwork - sounds like your D has done this. Submitted apps and is tying up lose ends. Hopefully you can get dates scheduled if the apps are in.
@Mel2421 I agree with @Ducky312 - we decided against sharing a room at Unifieds (with a friend) as I knew my kiddo would need space should things not go perfectly. And she definitely needed space - to rehearse, to cry, to call a friend, etc. I spent a lot of time in the lobby. Lol.
@theaterwork - Your D is not alone! We (and many others here) had the exact same experience with counselors & friends D’s senior year. They thought she was nuts. And soon the friends will be getting acceptances, getting roommates & planning dorm decor. The MT kids are auditioning and waiting. And waiting. And waiting. Everyone here gets it, but it’s hard out in the “real world” for people to understand!
Especially if you live (as I do) in a Midwest state where the majority of kids apply to schools with rolling admission… People couldn’t believe (in March) that she hadn’t heard from any of her schools yet! (She actually had, but only rejections came early her year)
@toowonderful … same!!
D’s friends were finding roommates and picking out coordinated bedding and my girl was still auditioning!
@theaterwork I live in Staten Island so if your D applies and auditions and is seriously interested in Wagner, I can help you (or anyone) with info about Staten Island (and traffic - lol!). I live about 10 minutes drive from Wagner College. You do not have to pay to park in Staten Island. Street parking is mostly free, although there are some shopping areas with hourly meters. But that is not the norm. We have a Hilton and a Hampton InnRight now, I’m lurking here and reading, gathering info for my S. He’s only a HS sophomore, but thinks he wants to go MT. So, I’m doing the research now! Love learning from this board!
Thanks everyone! We were at the Moonifieds hotel today and it is only 40 minutes from home so we decided we will not stay at the hotel after all. She can sleep in her own bed and have a meltdown if necessary. Be aware if going to Moonifieds parking is all Valet and $16 per day. We enjoyed the Master class today with Kaitlyn from Texas State.
Has anyone gotten a call from PACE asking for you to apply for Merit Aid? They also mentioned a free application fee? Anyone? Thanks!
Sorry the call was from Rider not PACE.
Take advantage! My D didn’t apply to rider but got fee waivers and other info/offers from different schools. Lots of schools will do this to help encourage someone to apply
