Class of 2021 (sharing, venting, etc)

It seems like it’s our turn at last! I’m excited to embark on this journey!

Count me and my d in!

Wow… where did the time go? It’s hard to believe that years of lurking and here we are! Good luck to our kids and here’s to hoping we stay sane throughout the process!

Welcome @MTMHopeful we have narrowed down the list to 10 schools. My daughter will be at Wagner’s Summer Musical Theatre Institute this summer and she is so excited. I am glad CC exists otherwise I would be clueless.

Is it really time, sniff sniff :((

To those of you creating your lists- I think virtually any of the “veterans” here would tell you that having a balance and not sticking only to really high reach schools is REALLY important

… and balance includes financial safeties as well.

Also… Shenandoah!!

It’s hard to imagine that one year from now we will qualify as old timers & our S&D’s will be choosing their schools. Shout out to all that have gone before us & shared so frankly the ups & downs of “the process”. I started reading here several years ago and have used the information at every turn. How unprepared I would have been without CC! True story: I kept reading about dance belts for auditions and wondered if I should get one for my D. So yeah… I need this forum!

Welcome to all newcomers. May you find lots of answers and support from the only group of people on the planet that “gets it”.

It really goes by so fast! If any of you have questions about specific schools, there is a thread listing schools and names of members with students there (or in some cases the students themselves) available to answer questions. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/1808884-mt-school-forums-p8.html. Hopefully as people this year make their decisions they will add to the list.

I think that thread you mentioned should be pinned to the top.

Ok guess I’m officially in this thread as a parent of a junior soon to be senior. Lol. We don’t have an official list of schools yet, still tweaking that.
Aren’t we supposed to be listing backgrounds of our kids?
My D is at an arts high school. She’s been involved in theatre since 3rd grade. Voice lessons for 7 years. Dance for 5 if you count her MT dance @ school. 7 summers of theatre camps of varying degrees. She’s been in a slew of shows, school based, community theatre etc. No regional theatre or anything professional. She normally gets a lead part in shows but knows that doesn’t mean squat for college stuff.

She is normally pegged for her singing but recently has been recognized more for acting which is a nice change. She is a soprano belter & I would say she’s a singer first, then acting & dance.
She has remained steadfast on MT as her major. BA or BFA she’s open to both. We attended SETC & she received good feedback/callbacks there so that was a good experience at least.

I will try to remain sane & calm on this forum but I’m not making any promises :open_mouth:

@theaterwork what is SETC? Thanks!

My d has loved Theatre since she was 6. She attended a Performing Arts school for 4 years but attended a Traditional High School. She has danced since she was 3. Ballet, Tap, Jazz and pointe. She took classes in Musical Theatre and Film/TV acting. As a Sophomore she competed nationally in the Classical Singer competition in Musical Theatre. She was also lucky enough to get accepted into the Wagner College Summer Musical Theatre Institute this summer. While we are in New York we will visit Ithaca and then Rider and Montclair in Jersy this summer. We already visited Wagner and Pace. She really hasn’t done a ton of shows because she is involved in Drill Team, Choir and Theatre in school. When she was a Freshman she got nominated for a Betty Buckley award for Student choreography. We are excited for this journey with you all. BTW we are from Arlington, Tx.

@Mel2421 SETC is the Southeastern Theatre Conference. It was in March in NC. You can audition for colleges there as a junior. It’s good practice & my D did get interest from schools there. Ypu can google it . It’s where college kids can audition for summer stock etc too. Lots going on! Workshops etc .

And also to note, I’m thinking our list of schools may be more of a non traditional list of lesser known schools but perhaps that will be helpful to someone else that perhaps doesn’t know about some of them.

Hi Everyone… So glad I get to go through this journey with some others!!! LOL I know I will need all the virtual support I can get! My daughter has been performing since she was in 6th grade. She has been taking voice for about 4 years now. She does not have a lot of formal dance training, but we just started taking privates/classes to really work on technique. She did not tell us that she wanted to pursue theater as a career until literally a few months ago. I think she was honestly scared to tell us. She is extremely academic and we just always thought she would go to school for something other than theatre. She had talked about nursing for awhile, and possibly teaching. We knew she loved theatre, but always thought it would be her hobby. She wants to be involved in all aspects of theatre, but her love is MT and being on stage. She really has a gift of organization and management as well. Her school just put on Annie and my d played Annie, choreographed and stage managed the whole thing. She has also held some lead/supporting roles in our community theatre. She LOVES it. I am hoping for the best for all of us:) We do not have our list of schools finalized yet… still working and researching.
