Class of 2022 - How was move in?

We left our sweet 17 year old D (violin) at NEC this past weekend. She’s had her placement tests and orch audition and is now finalizing her schedule before the returning students arrive. She already has a quartet that invited her to join over the summer so she won’t have to search out a group. She and her roommate are becoming good friends and she seems very happy. Boston is having a very hot spell and while her room has A/C (thank God for new dorms!) the old dorm building (now turned into practice rooms) does not so the extra practice rooms are great but it’s hard right now with the heat/humidity. That will get better soon, hopefully. She has an ongoing medical condition so her private teachers (she is in 2 studios for freshman year, husband/wife team) wanted to meet with us while we were in town so we were invited to their lovely brownstone for a chat. I think it really put her at ease as they also talked about rep and scheduling and all things violin. I didn’t cry until i checked in at the airport - one family member less - and when the airplane lifted off. But it is hard to be sad because she is so happy!!

Let me know how your freshman’s first days are going!

That is so wonderful @Violinmomaz!!! Welcome to the NEC family. Hopefully the wonderfully pleasant weather yesterday and today helped a bit. The new dorms are lovely!!! I hope the semester continues to be full of new discoveries, challenges and joy.

This summer when I went back to NEC to see our son perform at the final Jazz Lab Concert (he was teaching at Jazz Lab this summer), I got this warm fuzzy feeling and that is because NEC was so filled with happy memories for our son for 8+ years (he did NEC Prep and was an undergrad there).

I am local if you ever feel you need a “local mom”.

Yesterday we hosted one of my son’s best friends from his undergraduate years at NEC. The two spent many nights starting Freshman year staying up late creating music and talking about life. And now they are roommates in NYC. My son’s friend is in Boston because he was hired to play for the current production at the A.R.T (so everyone in the Boston area should go to it!!!). It was so much fun to have this other adult who knows our son so well hang out with us for the morning.
