We had two schools that required a dance combo. My D is a mover not a dancer, so she just did two different combos she had done in the past. We recorded them in our basement (more room and solid floor), and it didn’t seem to be an issue!
@collegemom2000 I think on Pace it says optional dance (on the website)! That is one of the schools we are not sure of what to do. The other ones where it is required Temple/ Otterbein/ Rider we will definitely include the dance video and just cross our fingers! But Pace and Shenandoah both say optional.
Oh good, I didn’t realize Pace was optional. Thank you!!
@stagedoormama Fantastic! That is very reassuring to hear. Thank you!
@collegemom2000 Hey, we did straight acting, but I will share my thoughts on dance prescreen. If she is a good dancer, then you could film in your living room, and she would probably still pass. Personally, if it’s her weak area, I would put in a little effort to be sure you pass. Ask either HER dance teacher, or ANY dance studio, if you can use the room for 20-30 minutes, and personally, I would ask the dance teacher for a tiny bit of assistance. I know the money adds up, but you are going to spend ALL that money on tuition, you have to get past the goal post. Pay someone 30-50$ to use the studio and help tighten the routine just a tad. It’s PASS/FAIL for PreScreens, clever people keep reminding me of that. Hope this helps!
Anyone find that hidden gem…or even just a hidden school where the net cost < 18k for IS or OOS.
Hello again! My D is going for almost all straight acting programs, not MT, and I still can’t really find the group that is only Straight Acting BFA? Does anyone know? Or are any of you straight acting? I still enjoy everything about THIS little community but am also curious to track progress of acting specfically
@FourStars I started the thread myself last year because there was some controversy that I was posting on the MT board. One wise guy made a comment but just about everyone came to my defense and said I was welcome there. I did post on both though. But hold on…this is the straight acting board LOL!
Link to Musical Theater message boards:
@fourstars - this is the straight theater forum. You are right that there is a lot of crossover between the acting and MT groups, and it can occasionally be confusing as to whom you are talking to at any given time
So for all the folks talking about dance prescreens etc., - that IS just for the MT programs, right??
@StewNChelle check out Western Carolina. They are part of a NC program (?NC Promise it might be called) and it makes it super cheap for in state and also reduces cost for OOS kids. I hear the program is good. Also - the state schools with known BFAs are great for IS students - U Minn/Guthrie; UNCSA; SUNY purchase; Rutgers; Montclair, etc. Several may also have ways to bring costs down for OOS students - many factors go into that. I think Montclair may provide IS tuition for all BFA’s but not positive. Texas State may do that too.
@katew529 yes - I believe so. For those with the dance questions, you may get more responses on the MT forum. Link posted above. But people go back and forth a lot b/w the two and all are welcome. It just gets confusing sometimes.
@bfahopeful - the confusion was why I suggested combining forums a while ago… got shot down
Contrary to my CC name, this time around I’m an Acting mom! D #1 was MT (just graduated). There is a lot of crossover & usually the MT board is a lot more active, but this year it seems like there are a good number of us who post pretty frequently - yay! And @katew529, I’m pretty sure they’re talking about MT for dance prescreens.
@toowonderful, actually, originally there WAS just one theater board for everyone, but then the MT people lobbied to get a,separate MT board, because the information on requirements, dates, preparation, etc was so different from acting and they wanted a separate space to avoid confusion. (It was way before my time, but when I first discovered CC, I obsessively read ALL the theater threads, including the archived ones from 2009-2010!)
@actorparent - I’ve obsessively read all those threads too! I still think there is merit for recombining, as so many kids audition for both types of programs, (as mine did) but it’s fine this way too
As someone with a kid who’s applying for only one type of program (acting, not MT), I’m sincerely grateful for the separation. The whole process feel so overwhelming already that it’s nice to be able to bypass the mountains of info that’s specific to MT. A big time/sanity saver for those of us not doing both.
I agree @katew529
And of course those of us with kids who DID do both had to shift through the mountain 2x … but hey, po-ta-to / po-tah-to. All BFAs matter
