I thought I would start a new thread since it’s so quiet on this acting board. Anyone else applying for precollege programs this upcoming summer? My S has applied to Northwestern/Cherubs and NYU/Tisch and plans to submit to Emerson too.
My S went to Interlochen last 2 years, and I expected we would do a precollege program. After a surprisingly short conversation, S decided to focus on a summer job, and 1 on 1 coaching for college monologues. At first I felt slightly nervous about a departure from a more standard path, but life skills learned on with a job has some value as well. He may take an summer acting class locally.
Hi Twoboysandadog, my son just applied to the Cherubs program at Northwestern as well. They said we’ll know on Feb. 6th, so if he doesn’t get in he’ll apply to BUSTI at Boston Univ and UNCSA. He really wants Cherubs, because he would love to focus on Chicago, but any of them will be great training and a great life experience. Good luck to your son! Maybe our two guys will be at Cherubs together, if we’re lucky. Andrea
@GrantsMom – Did they tell you Feb. 6th? I guess I thought it would be on Feb. 3rd. I’m honestly a little worried about the deadlines. If he gets into Cherubs, it may turn out that they want their nonrefundable deposit before we hear from NYU. I guess we’ll just see what happens and cross that bridge when we get to it. Good luck to your son! My son did an in-state precollege program last summer where he lived in the dorms and attended theatre classes 10 hours a day. He loved it!
Yes @Twoboysandadog, when we sent in the initial application they semt us a confirmation email that listed the required supplemental materials and went over the process. At the bottom it listed the deadline for early admission (Jan 13th) and said that all applicants would be notified by email on Feb. 6th.
What state do you live in? I’m wondering what program your son did last year. It sounds like he’s already had some great training! Is he MT or straight acting?
Andrea
You’re right. I just went back and looked at the email. Thanks for pointing that out because I would have definitely been waiting for the email on Feb. 3rd otherwise. My S is straight acting and went to California State Summer School for the Arts (CSSSA) last summer.
I’m wondering what the students on this board who were accepted to Cherubs at NHSI decided??
My daughter had early acceptance, and we are in the throws of decisions.
@workinmum – My S was accepted to the Acting on Film concentration in the Film & Video division and he is going. He’s very excited because he wants to start writing too and they offer afternoon electives that will give him that. Congrats to your D!
My S was also accepted early decision to the Theatre program and is excited to go! @workingmum, did your D apply to other programs as well? Good luck with your decision!
Congratulations to the newest Cherubs, @GrantsMom and @Twoboysandadog !
My daughter was accepted to Cherubs early decision. We just found out that the renowned and very popular director of the program for the past 20 years stopped working for Northwestern University last fall. There is a new director. Does anyone know how this might change the program at Cherubs?
Thank you, @LuvsLabs!
I don’t know, but am wondering too. There’s a chance things could be disorganized or very different because of the change of leadership, but I’m hoping it will still be an excellent program. I’d also be curious if anyone else has any insights.
My D decided NOT to submit for Cherubs (much to my disappointment!). I have heard nothing but great things about the program. She is likely submitting for Emerson, BUSTI and Rutgers. We are still working on her prescreen package. She has been in shows non-stop (sometimes 2 at a time) since October. Her voice teacher is going to record her 16 and 32 bar cut piano accompaniment this week or next, then her brother will do her videos. I pushed hard to have her do it over Christmas break but lost the battle :((
Cherubs has been around a very long time and has a high reputation. I’m sure the replacement director they hired is well qualified and will continue the tradition.
That’s what I was thinking too. I’m sure they were very selective with their decision. And sometimes a new person can bring a fresh perspective and some really positive changes. That’s what I’m hoping for anyway!
And at least you have a director hired. Film & Video Division doesn’t even have one yet!
Ack!!! I hope they find someone soon!
The director they newly hired is an outsider, and has never worked at NHSI Cherubs.
I have also heard that many of the main faculty will also not be returning, due to the previous director not being there.
They are in the process of finding faculty replacements.
I do think these are concerning issues worth looking into.
It was my understanding that it wasn’t “faculty” working - that it was current theatre college students or recent college graduates who teach the classes. If so, there’s probably always a fair amount of turnover for these positions.
