Hey can someone explain to me how the open call process works at NYC unifieds?
^^^And if there is a similar/same process at Chicago unifieds?
Also, S Got an email from Acceptd: Check out Acceptdās 2018 Unified Auditions Digital Bulletin Board.
Is this anything?
Veterans - please advise. Thanks!
For NYC Unifieds, we are here now. Anyone here?
If you mean, how do you get a Walk In, go the FIRST DAY if possible, and your son/daughter should find the person at the table for that school (sometimes it is not RIGHT in front of the room, but nearby), and politely say you did not get the chance to apply but would like to know if there are any walk-ins available. Be sure you know your schedule to say yes or no on the spot. Also may need the audition fee in either cash or check to pay.
@Atreuh - Just looked it up, you mean this?https://getacceptd.com/app/uploads/2018/01/2018_Digital_Unifieds_Bulletin_Board.pdf
Looks like promotion for schools/programs attending Unifieds? Probably just want to have students look at it (to justify charging the programs $500 for participating).
@KarenK99 Wow, I wish weād known this earlier re UNC Greensboro! The delayed entry into the BFA track was what kept one HS senior I know from applying there. Thanks for sharing.
@stagedoormama - as I figured. Advertsing. Thanks
Ditto on post #455 re:BU and standardized test scores. They strongly emphasized rescinding your SATs if they were below 1250 (sorry I do not remember the ACT) today @ Unifieds. Non-BFA students average in the mid-1400s, we were told. The admissions office does not even crack open your application folder until they get an artistic acceptance from the department, and then they evaluate for academic admit. She sounded very frustrated that good (but not outstanding) test scores have kept out some of their top choices. That being said, the department has very little to give out for talent aid, and whether test scores are required for need-based aid was not addressed.
Hi All! I just landed home from NYC for our first audition and it was at Fordham University and it was a lot longer than what Iāve read on CC. Some of the things that happened
Most of the āmainā theatre department who are the decision makers came out for a 45 min discussion. I thought it would be informative but it actually answered many questions seen on CC
Iāll try to list them
- they create and perform 20 studio actsincluding actors, writers, directors and most of the time, there is a Successful Alum helping or the staff. There are 4 main stage plays
- Most of their seniors this year already have work in some capacity lined up and many of them are working now and finishing up school
- Denzel Washington was brought up a few times along with several other high profile actors/actresses and directors who āoftenā come and sit in on a class and it turns into a workshop āOftenā The department head Mathew was grateful for the huge endowment that was made to their program.
*admissions director stressed that it is NOT a 50/50 academic and audition that gets you in. It is the entire picture. You can have several AP classes but only have an avg of C+ and have amazing talent. She expressed firmly that it is not always the 4.0 high SAT score kid who has the best talent and they arent expecting it. They may just be OK acedemically and if hey can see that the student can handle college coursework and have the talent and succeed, they may be admitted.
*The Performing Arts college is Fordhams Special division and they want to continue to produce successful students
- although its a BA, the clockwork is of a BFA training
There were Senior students making rounds in the lounge area stopping by auditioners and parents to make them feel comfortable. One senior sat with us for 35 minutes chatting about goals and hes Sure they will not just cut you off after 1.5 minutes. (My son did his best to make it during this time and they actually had him slow all the way down into a 3 minute contemporary monologue)
My S auditioned his classical and contemporary for the george drance and another lady Elizabeth I believe. After they said they were running out of time at the beginning, they spent about 15 minutes playing with his classical pieceā¦ asking him to paraphrase some parts and both kept saying āvery very niceā after about 15 or so minutes, he was sent to the other room and had to perform both plays in front of the Dept head, Dawn Saito and another lady for another 10-15 minutes. Ironically, they too chose to play with his classical piece. From the time they took 3 boys in his group his audition was about 30 minutes between both rooms.
They took a Lot of notes, asked what other schools he is applying to. He threw a few Meh then shared Purchase and Juilliard to end it
Hope this helps someone
Maybe there is something divine here. The deadline had passed and we called and asked if we could please submit an application and the department allowed it.
Good experience but not getting hopes up until we see an acceptance and hopefully a scholarship to curb the pricetag (ouch)
Also, we were right across from the Womens March. It was peaceful and since we walked out at 4:30 (yes 1-4:30) we were able to through the park for a little while before having a bite and getting on the plane
@actingdreams that sounds like it went really well. A great summary too. I learned a lot about Fordham i didnāt previously know. Thx.
Thanks so much @actingdreams! My D has her Fordham audition next Saturday. This info is so helpful. Sending the good vibes your way!
Iām glad that I can help and of course she will be amazing. There was not a stuffy feel. Even the student speaking to us about going over 1.5 minutes said that he couldnt imagine them stopping someone midway through their monologue. BAL
Thx. Sounds like the experiences can be very different. My S was in and out in 5 minutes. He did not go to a second room. He was not asked to work in any way. Hopefully, there are many paths to admission! We have now been to 5 of his 7 auditions, and I have to say that Fordham does a great job. The presence of the students, the tours, etc. are all first class. It certainly made a positive impression on me and my S. Probably the nicest freshman dorm I have ever seen. As aside, we are in NYC, too. One audition yesterday and one today. Only two more to go over the next two weeks.
@VASkydog youāre almost at the end. BAL! Weāre just starting. I hate that we didnāt attend the tour afterward. we were already there for quite a long time and after spending so much time with the auditors, my son nervously was ready to go. I hate that I didnāt get to visit the dorm area etc. Thanks for letting me know how nice everything else was. We are back home in Chicago We applied late to Fordham, Flew in because our schedule was filled for unifeds here so we made a 24 Hour Trip just to audition at Fordham. Hope it works out for all of your Sās top choices. I continue to express that he will be rejected by many and letās just hope for a few that he is really interested in Have a wonderful time! PS. Iāve read that some did not go to another room and they were still accepted! <3
@plxsendhelp we are from NJ and my D is currently pursuing a BA at Loyola Marymount in LA. She has a NY agent but since she is in LA now, she is also working with their counterpart in the LA office. His attitude when she met him last year wasā¦donāt bother going to college for an acting degreeā¦just move to LA and go to Santa Monica CC and audition your butt off. That was definitely NOT what we wanted to hear! I was surprised by that attitude to say the least. The fact is that my D really wanted to be in CA so applied to eight schools there. I was very surprised that it was not easy to find great programs in California. On the advice of her agent she chose a BA for its flexibility although she was accepted to five BFA programs. She is only a freshman so we shall see where this path leads but after an adjustment period she is very happy where she is. There is a CCāer on here who is from Atlanta so perhaps she can chime in @milmom2
@marg928 I am surprised your agent give your D that advice. My Dās agent gave her the exact opposite advice ā he told her you look very young and you will still look young 4 years from now so go get your training in college and then start auditioning (the contacts you can make in college programs could be very helpful for the future). Iām happy to say she took his advice, graduated with her BFA in May, and is now auditioning her butt off! LOL. Best of luck to your D!
@momof2lefties Sounds overwhelming! It would seem worthwhile for someone to start a thread specifically for tech folks! Very specific info there & most of the acting/MT stuff probably doesnāt apply.
It is new this year! UNCG BFA audition as high school senior, I mean, for upcoming fall term.
At Syracuse auditions today. Light at the end of the tunnel. One more next weekend. Not sure what I am going to do with all of my free weekends. Laundry, I guess. It has been a lot of travel over the last month. Interesting experience. Learned a ton.
BAL @VASkydog Laundry sounds nice when youāve been running around to help your dream chaser BAL today
I was super-happy to finish up auditions last weekend in NYC, but have found this week that the waiting game is so much worse without travel to plan!!!
