Class of 2022 (sharing, discussing, application and audition season)

As applicant for RD for Fall 2018 – anyone out there have a feel of general Merit award for 4.3 WGPA, 30 ACT out of state, top 50 national high school (not sure if latter matters)…just trying to see if I’ll be on higher/lower range, and ballpark amount as absent a big merit award (won’t qualify for need), it’s not going to make the cut.

@A1A1A1 - what school?

@toowonderful - both Syracuse and Miami (Florida)

@A1A1A1 - gotcha. In 2014 my D, who had similar stats (slightly higher ACT) got a $15k merit award at Syracuse, and was invited to apply for a competitive merit scholarship… the name of which escapes me.

Has anyone auditioned at Rutgers?

@myboy2000 Yes, a few of our children have. There’s a whole robust conversation on our other thread about it. It’s for Acting auditions. Here’s the link to get to the thread. You might need to go back a few pages. We’ve had a lot to discuss!

Is that what you were looking for? Or do you have any specific questions? It seems like such an amazing program!

@ginaf1102 Thank you so much! My son auditions Rutgers 2/7. We wanted to get a feel for what the process is. Sounds like it’s a great experience! My son has a mix of MT and acting auditions. I didn’t know about the acting thread! Thank you so much.

@myboy2000 - my pleasure! That thread has been very helpful in preparing my D for what to expect. It is a kind and supportive group. I wish I could have everyone over for tea. BAL to your S on 2/7. My D loved her Rutgers audition.

My daughter auditioned for Pace FTVC last weekend (she has already been accepted academically with a great package). The admissions just called to ask how Pace rated on her list. They asked if she had a chance to visit, whether she applied for financial aid, etc. Is that a good sign? Has anyone else gotten this call?

@bfa2018 It’s always a good sign when the schools follow up. In our experience, Pace tends to call quite a bit. Even if your student chooses to go elsewhere.

My son is BA IPE at Pace. The (numerous) follow up calls from Pace admissions are not related to the Performing Arts artistic decisions. These calls are the typical college recruitment tactic.

The phone call that matters is the invitation (from faculty) to attend. Artistic acceptance letter follows. The faculty call usually comes in mid- to late March after all auditions have been completed and decisions made.

@coronado would you know if Pace provided any Talent Scholarships after auditions and acceptions? also, do you know how large your sons class is? thanks for the information

@bfa2018 We did get a call from Pace yesterday (but we were flying home from CMU auditions). They did not leave a voicemail (just as they haven’t for the months they have been trying to recruit her academically. My d got her academic acceptance and auditioned 2 weeks ago today, so we haven’t heard anything. We also came home to her financial package. It’s the first one we received, and without sounding too idealistic, I was hoping it would be more. At the audition Q&A, they said they do give talent $, but who knows how much. So, I’m not sure how I (or my d) wold have answered that question. The reality is a) it is not ‘that’ high on her list, and b) if she is in a position to choose, and other schools offer her more, she will not choose them. Having said that. she has no acceptances thus far, only a waitlist from a school that costs less and she’d likely be more inclined to attend. it’s not that she doesn’t like the school; she just likes other ones more. But, beggars can’t be choosers.

Just wanted to share my d’s experience at this weekend’s CMU audition, to add on to what @FourStars and @bfahopeful wrote from two weeks ago. My d was auditioning for MT, so she sang (with accompaniment) in one room, then did 2 monologues for Don, with re-directs, then was passed on to Barbara. Barbara asked for a third monologue, with redirects (and asked her to take her shoes off!!). She also asked her to sing again (a capella) and they discussed her HS, the roles on her resume and how it relates to a ‘type’ (and that it went well with her third monologue). Now, if only they need her type!! Barbara asked her if she would consider acting, in addition to MT.

@DramaQueen219 if anyone had a bad audition, your D’s pick-up after hers should give people hope. I think you had said that Juilliard was not good for her and now your D seems to have put some serious thought into Barbra nd being accepted into CMU! there is always something great ahead even if it doesn’t look like it while you’re in the midst of things

@DramaQueen219 , that sounds extremely encouraging at CMU. That is very exciting. It certainly sounds like your odds are higher if you get passed to the second room, so that you see both Don and Barbara. Hoping for good things!

@actingdreams, it’a amazing how with some, they get a ‘feel’ that is different. Before this, with the other 4 she did, she said the acting ones were the hardest ones to read. I reminded her that they are actors too, lol. @FourStars, she definitely does feel good about it. But we know (from this site) that they are generally known to be very nice there (but the second look with the additional monologue and extra directs seem to be positive!).

This is a bit of a stretch but did anyone last year happen to audition for acting and musical theatre at Baldwin Wallace the same day?? We have 2 separate days scheduled but flights are making it really hard for one of the days

@marysike BW website says to schedule on different days. We did the acting only and that was fairly quick (1-1.5 hrs) but the MT are all day. With some help from BW I could see squeezing in an acting audition during some of the wait for MT but it would require their assistance. Good Luck!

@actingdreams - my son’s IPE class is ~20 (actors) and 4 (directors). I think that’s a similar count to other drama majors (BFA acting and FTVC); but not sure.

Don’t know much about talent scholarships but my son says that each major (IPE, BFA acting, and FTVC) gives a student a full ride. Or that is how it was a few years ago. Not sure that’s the case currently.

At this year’s audition parent overview, Wayne mentioned that the department gives talent scholarship (which would stack on the academic package as long it doesn’t exceed the cost). However, he did not provide details (number given or amount). Hope that helps.
