@emdcollege Here is the harsh truth of the matter. All these kids have a #1 dream school and statistically very few actually get that magical acceptance if it is one of those tippy top schools that admit 8-10 girls. That being the case, unless she is absolutely 100% certain that she would choose her safety over any other auditioned program, I would really think long and hard before canceling auditions. Last year the one thing my daughter and I agreed on was that we would do our utmost to cast a wide net so that at the end of the day she would hopefully have choices (she did) and ultimately would not have regrets about not seeking out a variety of opportunities and programs. She didn’t get into her #1 dream school, but she did get into one of her top choice audition schools along with several others that she carefully considered. Some of them were programs that she wasn’t all that familiar with before auditions, but really fell in love with during the audition process when she got to know the programs better and met directors, students and alumni. My point is, that if you don’t go through with the auditions you have planned (which by the way is by no means an outrageous number), will she be in a place at the end of this process of wondering what if? Especially if #1 doesn’t work out. You have time to think it through - I wouldn’t be hasty about canceling applications at this point.
@emdcollege so am I reading 15 schools. Question how many auditions will you be doing if you do them all? As the previous poster said are they academic acceptances and you’re waiting on the artistic audition or acceptance. How does she really feel about the other 9 schools? In our process we had 11 schools 4 required prescreens. We scheduled 11 auditions. Ended up canceling one because she decided she couldn’t see herself living where the school was located. One we had to cancel because of weather. We netted two MT acceptances and two redirects into other areas of performing arts. Depending on your financial situation, and how competitive each of the programs she’s applied to should factor into whether she needs to audition at the other 9 schools. Best of luck in the process.
@emdcollege - @sopranomtmom is absolutely right. There are scores of stories (sorry; bad pun) about kids who considered a school to be way down on their list, then they got to the audition and were hooked. (The reverse is also true - what you think is a dream school may turn out to be a dud; this was my D’s experience after auditioning at her then-dream school - she hated the place). You and your D don’t want to be saying “what if?” at the end of this process. There will be a lot of twists and turns ahead of her; it’s too early to call it a day on these schools.
@emdcollege - Ditto exactly what @EastchesterMom said!!! My D did the same - hated one of her “top 3” programs when we visited for her audition and fell in love with a program that was somewhere in the middle. She did drop a couple of auditions after she was accepted to the one she fell in love with (they still did rolling admissions back then & she found out quickly that she was admitted). She just graduated from the school she wasn’t even that sure about on paper.
Thank you everyone for the replies - I will pass on the thoughts to my daughter. The 3 schools she is accepted to are not auditioned based programs. I think she is overwhelmed and the waiting to hear from schools about prescreens is weighing on her. I am going to ask her to let things ride for a bit and see where we stand in a month or so. For all we know she won’t pass a few prescreens anyway and those schools will be off the list anyway.
My daughter got into her #1 choice school but ended up choosing her safety
@bisouu - and she has done spectacularly well!
Hi 2022’ers!! Just wanted to pop in here and wish you guys lots of broken legs as you start to get into the thick of audition season.
My kiddo had a CRAZY time of it … lots of tears, lots of no’s and even broke her foot during the dance portion of an audition. (And no, I’m not being dramatic … she really and truly broke her foot!)
She’s now a very happy junior at a school that wasn’t even on her radar in the fall of her senior year. And I don’t think she could picture herself anywhere else. (Especially because she is currently playing her dream role at that school … she’s having a helluva junior year!)
Honestly, I would do her audition season over in a heartbeat … even with all the sadness, it was so great to spend so much time on the road with her, going from audition to audition. So treasure this time moms (and dads!) … it goes way too fast.
Much love to you all!!!
Hi everyone. Doesn’t seem possible I was in your position 5 years ago. My D just graduated with her BFA MT in May and has been doing shows locally since then. So there is a light at the end of the tunnel!
Good luck to all and would be happy to answer questions, especially from the dads out there…
@emdcollege agreeing with the others- keep your options open. You never know how this will all unfold. I would keep the auditions for now- it’s good to have options.
Did anyone audition this weekend? Looking forward to learning how it went.
Yes, same here. Break A Leg to all. Enjoy the ride
Is anyone on this thread heading to Point Park next weekend?
We will be headed to Elon for an audition this Friday!! Break a leg a Point Park. My D will be auditioning for Point Park at NYC Unifieds.
@mommafaria D has Point Park December 9. Would love to hear how it goes!
@mandidnam my D has her Elon audition this weekend as well. Break legs!
BAL to her, @owensfolks! And to all auditioning!
Break legs to everyone heading out for auditions this week! Point Parkers, feel free to hit me up if you have any questions. My D is a sophomore BFA MT.
Hi! Newbie mom here. My DD is applying for a BFA MT at a broad range of schools. The entire process scares me but I’ll do whatever I can to support her. So far she’s passed 2 pre-screens and we’re waiting to hear from a few more. We are attending NY Unifieds in January and would love to connect with some of you there!
Break a Leg to all of you auditioning soon!
BAL BAL to all of you (D says you have to say it twice)!
