Class of 2022 (the journey); sharing, venting, discussing

@artskids - my heart broke for your poor D! This is just a warm-up; the tough decisions continue into college. It goes like this: should I audition for that new Broadway show/ cruise ship gig/regional tour/you name it, or should I go to class/audition or rehearse for my college show? D and her cohort have been wrestling with this since last year; it’s so tempting when you’re in NYC. D considered skipping rehearsal for her main stage show to go audition for Royal Caribbean. She chose not to go to the audition, realizing that she probably would have been cut from the show for cutting rehearsal, and if she got the job, she would have to drop out of school - with only one semester to go. But I’m sure there are others who would have gone to the audition. These are the choices our kids will have to make in their careers as well.

Agreed. They will all make choices for their entire careers! It’s one of the reasons I’m glad my S was NOT in NYC for college. He would have been SO tempted to audition and hit the road!! Four years flew by and now, one semester to go and he can move to NYC and audition. In my opinion, for my kid, it was worth the wait.

@Dody5678 ~ Which hotel are you staying at? The Microtel offers a shuttle to town and the hospital but nut sure if they will shuttle you North Campus. I would call the hotel and ask.

There are shuttle service from the airports. I rented a car when we flew in but parking is very difficult on North Campus.

@lojosmo We are staying at the Hampton Inn. I think we will rent a car…praying for mild weather

With regard to temptations to do professional auditions if attending college in NYC…I just want to say that my kid went to college for a BFA in MT in NYC and never auditioned for professional shows (unless it was summer work). She was never tempted to. For one thing, there would not have been time to go to a daytime audition given the BFA schedule and strict attendance rules. But regardless of that fact, she felt she was there to go to college and all that entails, and that four years later, she would have the rest of her life to find professional jobs. She cared about using the four years for her education and wanted the degree. Most of her peers did not audition for such work until graduation.

D goes to school in. NYC, and has had friends who audition, and ones who don’t. Some spend a lot of time on it, some don’t. One ended up leaving Tisch (he became part of another program at NYU) b/c he wanted to have a more flexible schedule that would allow him to audition. He is currently appearing in an off bway play- so that worked for him. Others, including D, have gone to the occasional call, just to see what they are like- feeling that it is an educational opportunity. It can cause a flurry of “what if’s”, but like Soozie’s D, my kid has always prioritized the college piece rather than the NYC piece

Fun break - just purchased Hamilton tickets for D’s Christmas present. It is running in Chicago during Unifieds. I took D1 to see Cabaret two years ago during the same time; it is an awesome break from the chaos!

@artskids the Chicago cast is EVERYTHING! Enjoy!

@artskids I got Hamilton tix to surprise my daughter at Chicago unifieds too!! (Not that we really have the money after all these apps/ auditions/ hotels) but I couldn’t resist. She’s going to be soooo excited!!! I can’t wait to surprise her!!

We saw Hamilton in Chicago last year. Awesome show. Contemplating buying again for week of unifieds. It’s worth every penny.

@artskids @savedrama4momma enjoy Hamilton! It is great. My son and I saw it in SF. Any thoughts on a good show in NY when we are there for Unified? It sounds like a great way to blow off some steam.

We saw School of rock in October in NYC. Really good show. Talented children!

We just saw Once On This Island this past weekend…incredible! Tix were at TKTS, not a bad seat in the house as it’s such a small theater.
Other faves this year were Hello Dolly, Anastasia & Waitress.

I second Anastasia! We are looking to go in January when we drive D1 back to school!

Saw Anastasia when it was at Hartford Stage and loved it. My daughter saw Come From Away right before she went off to school for the fall and was blown away.

Saw Anastasia weekend before thanksgiving and enjoyed… which I did not expect (i don’t always like translations from animated movies). Once on this Island was FANTASTIC - but as mentioned a small theater, if you want to see it, plan in advance, not likely to be available at TKTS. Another option - the original stars of kinky boots (billy porter - and Stark Sands) are both back in Kinky Boots - but idk for how long (will they be there in Jan?) My D really loved a new show - The Band’s Visit. I plan on seeing it in a few weeks when we go back

@NYart15 and @toowonderful so cool you saw Once in this island. One of my D’s friends who graduated last May from UNCSA plays Daniel. She is dying to go see it.

@bfahopeful My D is obsessed with him thanks to that show!
He was very gracious at stage door. We immediately checked his bio.

@NYart15 that is so amazing! It gives me chills to hear awesome stuff kids are doing! (From any program)

@bfahopeful - I liked him a lot  @NYart15 - I am surprised that Once on the Island was at TKTS… though to be fair, it is still in previews, things are often easier to get in that stage (2 years ago I saw the original cast of Hamilton while it was still in previews - for $54 a ticket, but then again, my D saw it for the 1st time when it was still off bway for $15. Ah how things change  )

Also - for those looking into Hello Dolly, be advised that Bette Midler will no longer be with the show as of Jan 14th - but Bernadette Peters will be taking over the role, so could be well worth seeing.
