Class of 2022 (the journey); sharing, venting, discussing

We saw Hello Dolly with Donna Murphy. So awesome.

Any Temple MT applicants out there? My daughter just looked at her portal out of curiosity and we “think” it changed to say academic acceptance?! with a note saying School of Theatre will make a decision after her audition is completed. I had assumed we wouldn’t hear about the general Academic acceptance until after auditions. Anyone else who applied to Temple see a change in their portals? Just curious if we are reading that correctly?! It is a little confusing and we can’t 100% remember what that box said before since we hadn’t clicked on that portal since she applied months ago!

I highly recommend The Band’s Visit - not a blockbuster like Hamilton or Dolly, but moving and thought-provoking, with superb acting.

@MTmomSF - COME FROM AWAY hands down. I am a 9/11 (medical) responder at ground zero. This show is not only full of wonderful music/acting - it is healing and hopeful. Even after 16 years, every bit of restoration is precious. Order tickets well in advance because supply is low and it never is on TKS or Today Tix. Worth every penny.

@savedrama4momma My D’s Temple portal reads “complete and ready for review” and that there will be a check mark once a decision has been made. She should get a gold star just for that. First time I’ve seen the portal. Congrats if an acceptance is, indeed, your way!

@PaperTrope yes! That is what our portal used to say!!! Now it says academic acceptance! (Not that this means anything really for an MT kid) still proud though!

I second what @EastchesterMom said about the bonding that can come from this group. Some of us Class of 2021 moms have a Facebook group and it has really been great! If there’s anyone out there who has a current freshman PM me for details if you’re interested in joining!

@coronado I’m happy to hear that you enjoyed Come From Away. It is an amazing show and is this year’s incredible success on Broadway. It was written by two family friends of ours and we are so happy for their huge success. Not only for record-breaking ticket sales but for the Grammy nomination, the many Tony nominations, the recent receipt of the ASCAP Foundation Richard Rodgers New Horizons Award, advanced ticket sales in both NY and Toronto (for a return production that doesn’t even begin until February) over $10million. Just such an overwhelmingly wonderful time for this terrific young couple. I urge everyone to see this poignant, intelligent, funny, and joyous show that will make you laugh and cry in equal measure.

Another tale of not reading into the audition room: my S auditioned for a program earlier this month and left it feeling as if he did not impress the auditor at all. He was accepted.

@DramaMan That’s the kind of misreading a room that we love to hear :-)! Congratulations to your S.

Congrats, @DramaMan ! It is nice to have these reminders, as most kids suffer at least one “bad” audition at a top choice school.

Congrats, @DramaMan!

@artskids -

Perhaps your D can do stage crew for the final musical. It’s less of a time commitment at the HS level and would allow her to be involved with the show and to attend the cast parties. My S is a freshman theater tech student and he told me last year that several of his friends did crew the last show because they just didn’t have time to be in the play as an actor/actress. If she’s never done crew, it would also be a good experience going into college.

@techmom99 That’s exactly what she’s doing. She may work with the choreographer depending on time commitment requirements. She’s busy tech weekend so some of the crew assignments won’t work. She will find a way to be involved that will fit her schedule. Older D worked costume/makeup crews and LOVED them.

@artskids - my favorite of her creations (the painted ball gown) will be making an appearance in a production this winter

Who had auditions this weekend? My D had UArts-it seemed to go very well. Now she has a break until mid January.

That must be a good feeling @owensfolks!

My D hasn’t started auditions. Her first ones will be at NY unifieds.

Do people generally use the same songs and monologues as their pre screens, or do they change things up?

@MTMOM17 I was looking for guidance on this one, too. Some schools require the same rep for auditions as you used for prescreens. My D got some feedback on her songs and changed up her rep after her prescreens were recorded. Once she has all her prescreen results, she plans to contact the schools requiring the same package (so far, Ithaca requires the same songs). If the school does not specify they use the same material, we are going to assume she is free to change it up!

@MTMOM17 - Some schools require you to use the same package for auditions that you did for prescreens and some don’t care- check each schools requirements. We used the same as some of D’s schools required it and figured it was easier to keep things the same across the board. We know some people who have changed material if they feel it isn’t working.

D just had her first audition (she’s the Acting one!) & although she feels like it went well, now she says she doesn’t love her monologues and wants to change them. Some of her schools require the same as the prescreens, so she’ll either check with them about changing, or just use the same ones and use new for the others.
