So what is the average number of class per semester for the engineering college? How much do you recommend to take per semester?

You will most likely end up taking 5 per semester early on in your schooling, and settle down at 4 later on. I would NOT go to 6… EVER.

From the suggested sequence of classes on the website (I guess I will find out for certain at summer registration in June) it looks like the first semester for engineering you need to take Calc I, Rhet, Chemistry, an Elective and a 0 hour intro to Eng. course. They hit you up with only 14-15 hours the first semester which is kind. Seems like Calc I would not be too hard and Rhet would be ok if you are a decent writer but Chem could be tough especially since I have not taken it since junior year. I did not take AP Chem. Any insight into how hard Chem is? Are you competing with all the pre-med crazies??

I would say that 4 or 5 classes is standard. Although, I have taken 6 no problem. It just means a lot of hours spent in class. So I’d say most take 14-16 hours each semester.

As for chem, others can include their input, but I thought it was very reasonable. It was time consuming between homework and labs, but well taught and not too difficult if you study. (I got an A.)

thanks for the input cooljay…very helpful. may be a bit too probing but did you take AP Chem in high school? I guess I am a bit intimidated since I only took honors Chem (pretty rigourous teacher) and it was junior year. maybe I need to start looking at the periodic table for a little review?..or maybe it will all come back to me…don’t want to obsess…

Thanks for the responses, that was really helpful. I was also wondering how much hours a week you spend on homework related to the number of class/hours you take.

Chem is VERY dependent on the professor too. I had a TERRIBLE professor and it was absolutely horrible. That was my first semester here, and she still ranks among the worst professors I have ever had. On the other hand, my girlfriend is a CHEM 102 TA right now, and the professor she TAs for is very good.

Also, FWIW, don’t worry about being in there with pre-med majors. They are generally intelligent, but they are not any smarter than the average engineer. Chances are, as an engineer, you will understand what is going on in chemistry better anyway, while the pre-med student is more likely to have just memorized the stuff without actually knowing why it happens.

bonehead-thanks for the input. anyway to avoid that chem prof? do they give the prof name when you sign up for classes? maybe if you give the name I can avoid that one. :)

Sometimes they give the name. The prof I had was Lehman, but I don’t think she is here anymore. The one that I have heard is good is Hummel.

Roxy, I forgot to mention that. I did not take AP chem, just honors chem junior year. You should be fine. It starts out very slow…we talked about hypotheses lol, so don’t worry about studying ahead of time.

Oh and I had Weaver who was good plus a really bad TA which didn’t really matter.
