How much does Class rank matter at Brown?
I go to an extremely competitive public school and barely missed the top 10% cutoff, putting me in the second decile.
However, I have a 3.95 UW GPA with 7 weighted classes (5 APs) from my freshman to junior year.
How would this affect my chances?
Per the Common Data Set, class rank is “very important.”
If the school is Bronx Science, Stuyvesant, TJHSST, or similar, colleges will recognize the comparative rigor and the quality of the student body. However, if there are other applicants from your HS applying with higher GPA’s, all things being equal, your rank will be viewed less favorably.
Ditto what skieurope said. You might want to look at your school’s written profile, which is sent to the college, to see what it says about rank, etc.
And it matters how many others, above you, also apply. And kids from other hs in your very local area. Plus, your own rigor and what you got less than an A grade in, and the rest of your own app and supp. Know what your targets want to see.
