Class rank for different high schools

My son's school "doesn't do class rank".

However, they do publish a list of cutoffs for various GPA ranges, and the results are very strange compared to what my experience was in HS. That is, in HS I had around a 3.7 GPA and just missed the top 10% of the class (33 out of 300).

My son's school has a maximum of 4.6 for overall GPA. However, when you look at their class stats, over 30% have above a 3.9 GPA. That makes no sense to me. 90% have above a 3.0 overall GPA, which again I find incredible. This is for a public high school.

If anyone is willing to share some stats from their HS, that would be great. I do know his school inflates the grades of non-honors students, basically giving them a 0.3 point bump and therefore the honors and AP students get only a 0.7 point bump over regular classes.

Or is grade inflation so rampant that a B is a death sentence for class rank?

Or do colleges not bother to use class rank at all therefore?

PS - the average SAT score is 1600, as a point of reference.

In that pea soup of “rankings” and GPA percentiles, your son’s choice of rigorous classes and his SAT/ACT will come more into play.

You find credible that 90% are above average? And the average SAT is 1600 which is barely above average for all HS students?
