Class Rank is Important?

Hi, I’m going to be a senior next year and I was wondering how important class rank is to top schools such as the Ivy League.

I have mostly A’s and A+'s in the highest AP and honors classes available, but I have taken orchestra as an unweighted elective for four years due to my extracurricular requirements.

In our school, honors classes and AP classes are weighted the same, so there are many kids who take just the honors and have high class rank.

Due to these types of people, I have slipped from top 1% to 2-3% in our school. Without the electives, I would be first in the class by a huge margin.

So, my question is, Do top colleges really care that much about class rank, that dropping a couple percents would hurt me?

I would appreciate it if you could leave your thoughts and knowledge in the comments.

Thanks in advance!

Look up the Common Data Set for each, section C7. They do care about class rank, but not the difference between top 1% and top 2-3%.

I have found that when most schools post their admission data, they state class rank as a decile. I’m fairly certain you’re good
