class rank

how is class rank figure in college admissions
is it like most top colleges don't care beyond the top 10% or will it hurt if not in top 5%?

sorry for sounding so incoherent, but i'm deathly scared since i go to an average public high school (we send about 5 kids to really top schools per year) and i'm barely in top 10% of my 460-student class. My GPA is a 3.88 UW and 4 of my 5 Bs were from freshman year

It all depends on the school, so can’t give a blanket answer. You could look at a school’s common data set to see how a particular school factors the class rank and other parts of the application.

Depends on what school you want to go to. Selective colleges probably care about your rank, whereas state schools wouldn’t care as much, but it’d still matter a bit.

a lot of top schools say class rank is very important, but it’s hard to find an answer on how its used

A little all over the board, but my experience has been that class rank tends to matter more in scholarship money than in admittance itself.
