Class Rank

My school just started giving out class ranks. When I was a freshmen i envisioned myself being one of the top 25 --- I was so wrong. I have yet to receive my official rank, but its somewhere around 50-60 out of a class of 600. I am just really frustrated, cause im talking to some kids today and they told me they got ranked around 30, 35, 40, but were in regular and honors classes- no AP's. I understand that rankings are based on weighted averages, but that barely helped me. I get my rank tomorrow, and i suspect im around rank 55. How important is class rank in college admissions? My high school career consists of 9 AP classes, I thought i would be ranked in the top 25 but i came up so short. My parents know how disappointed I am with myself, and tell me its all okay but I just feel like my rank doesnt represent the work i put into highschool.

9 APs - Important
Grades in those APs - Important
Grades in other classes - Less Important, but still important
Test Scores - Important
Class Rank - Not so important

It depends upon the college. Class rank is king in TX public Us. Look at the Common Data Set for each school, section C7 to see what weight is applied to class rank. What @MrMom62‌ said is generally accurate but it all depends on the college.

omg 4 of the 8 colleges I am applying to listed it as “Very important/important”

You’re still in the top 10% of your class - that’s great!

Looking back over your original post, I’m starting to think your class ranks are based on UW GPA. You need to clarify this. This is why class rank is often discounted - either kids taking a more rigorous schedule are hurt by no weighting or the weighting is so flawed that it makes the situation worse.

In short, if everything else adds up, you are not going to be rejected by a school because of class rank, especially if you’re top 10%. It’s one factor out of many, and less important than you think, plus your factor is just fine.

@MaineLonghorn‌ @MrMom62‌ thank you both!
