Class rank

Hi,

Is being in the 38th percentile at high school good? I am 288 out of 740 with weighted 3.59 GPA.

Based on the figures you posted, you place at the 61st percentile.

I think that you might be computing percentile incorrectly. If 287 students have a higher GPA than you out of 740 students in total, then you are the 61st or 62nd percentile. To put it another way, the 99th percentile is very close to the strongest student in the high school, not the weakest.

Also, a 3.59 GPA is well above average in any “normal” high school in the US (I do not know whether there are a few private or specialist schools which might be different).

You are an above average high school student. This is good. This suggests that there will be many universities that may be a good fit for you.

For a tiny handful of the top ranked universities (Harvard, MIT, Stanford level) 61st percentile is not going to be sufficient. This is fine. There is no reason to want to attend a university at that level unless you are close to being the top student in your high school. There are vastly more universities that are a good fit for “solidly better than average” students such as yourself.

I’m confused. You were active on this board in 2020, when you indicated you were enrolled at UMass.

I’m closing this thread and will clarify this user’s status as they previous posted that they were a college student.
