So, my son was just informed in a school meeting of the seniors, class ranking would be calculated by a new formula. 50% GPA and 50% SAT scores. This was the first year for AP classed counting as weighted.
He is currently #1 weighted and unweighted, has taken all offered AP classes, but ‘just’ got a 1380 on the only SAT test.
So, SAT score .625 + GPA250. His AP classes give him just .14 or so extra.
He has a friend, 2 b’s, 1 A- that has just jumped from number 33 GPA rank, to number 1 ahead of my son.
Not even sure if my son is top ten any more.
Lots of things wrong with this starting with the fact that they made this grading scale up AFTER the SAT was taken, without notifying the parents.
Had we know SAT mattered, we would have spent more time on the test.
So, how to fight?
Are you in TX where rank matters for auto admission? If so, then I would definitely fight the change.
If not, your son’s GPA and SAT score are what they are. Course rigor is set as well. Does your school even report rank? If they do, you could ask the GC to include something in their LOR about the change in ranking formula since it is unconventional.
I have to ask why your son thought the SAT didn’t matter going into his senior year? That’s generally a critical piece of a students college application and certainly something to be prepared for.
Changing any GPA/class rank calculation in flight is baloney. Our school announced a change in Spring 2018 - it takes effect for the 2022 graduates, who were in 8th at the time. Everyone until then uses the scheme that was in place when they started HS/9th grade.
Unfortunately, if this was passed by the school board, not much short of a parent’s uprising will change it. Was it not discussed in advance? Our change was a year in development with two drafts out for comment.
Why did he even take the SAT if he doesn’t think it matters? Is he not planning on using it for college applications?
Did you confirm this info?
Ridiculous.
