Classes and professors

Hi,
So I plan to major in Bioengineering and haven't had my A&O yet but just wanted to be prepared and do my research before. I found out the prerequisites for my major but I'm not really sure whom to take those classes with. After someones advise I checked out the Course evaluation catalog as well as ratemyprofessor and came up with a list of top three Instructors/professors/TA for some of the courses. If anyone has taken any of these courses please check out this list and feel free to suggest/comment, thanks.

Mathematics:

Math 124
1st choice- Michael T Wojnowics(TA)
2- Mathew S Junge(Pre-doctoral associate)
3-Andrew Loveless(Instructor)

Math 125
1st choice- Alyson L Deines(TA)
2- Kennith P Bube(professor)
3- Andrew Loveless(Instructor)

Math 126
1st choice- Jennifer Taggart(Instructor)
2- Andrew Loveless(Instructor)

3- Alekzander Malcolm(TA)

Chemistry:

Chem 142
1st choice- Jasmine R Bryant(Instructor)
2- Phillip Reid(professor)
3- Colleen Craig(Instructor)

Chem 152
1- Colleen Craig(Instructor)

Chem 162
1- Andrea D carrol(Instructor)

Andrew Loveless is probably the best math professor for the 120 series. If his class is still open by your A&O, definitely get into his class. He teaches so well, that the median of his final exam can be 10% higher than those of other classes. Taggart is also a pretty good instructor, and I would say get her as your second choice.

I am not sure for chemistry but I know Bryant and Reid are both very good.

Thanks propro.
Anyone else, any advise on chem?
Also, is there a way to find out(before my A&O) which professors will be teaching which courses this autumn quarter?

I had Dr Bryant at Central, I was not a fan. She’s really funny/entertaining, but I would have preferred a stronger lecturer. She was paid much less at Central, which could have contributed to her lackluster performance.

This time schedule will help you find out when courses are offered as well as who is instructing them:
[University of Washington Time Schedule](University of Washington Time Schedule)

Thanks OldDawg. Although I couldn’t find the name of the instructors, the schedule definitely gave me an idea of which class would be when.

Dylan,
The instructors are listed under the “instructor” column.
For example, when you are looking at CHEM courses, CHEM110 is instructed by Craig, Colleen three days a week. In addition to her class, it looks like you must sign up for a quiz section. It looks like eight different quiz sections are available. I hope this helps!

Hi thanks I see it now, though can’t see it for math yet. So, will I have to take all the quiz classes or just 1 ?

You choose the one quiz section you wish to accompany the class

once again, thanks :)

I had Reid. I thought he was pretty good.

Avoid TA’s if you can. They are a shot in the dark. Most of the TA’s I’ve come across either can’t speak English efficiently enough to help you or can’t teach even if their life depended on it. For Math 124, Loveless is golden. For Math 125, both Bube and Loveless are great. For Math 126, Loveless over Taggart. I’ve heard Taggart is somewhat mean, and seems to get very distracted by students during lecture. For Chem 142, I had Bryant, and she was very “geeky” in a good way, and I thought she explained concepts well. Her tests were not anything to be too concerned over. I’ve heard that Reid usually gives tough exams, and is really boring. Colleen Craig plans to retire soon (from what I’ve been told), and has shotty attendance. One friend of mine took her 152 class this past winter, and she was gone for more than half of the quarter, using “guest lecturers” to suffice, which is ridiculous. Carroll is known for having “tricky” exams.

Keep in mind, a better lecturer doesn’t necessarily mean a better decision for a course. Better lecturer= higher average grades on quizzes and exams= harsh curve= little room for error if you want a high grade.

Interesting fact: Loveless went to Washington State University.

The math instructors are typically not posted to the time schedule until a few days before classes start, at which point all sections are full. There is, however, an opportunity to switch sections during the first week of classes as students drop classes. Instructors sometimes take the same sections from one year to the next, so you can look at previous years’ time schedules for clues.

I’m taking Math 120 autumn quarter and I think my prof is going to be Conroy even though it doesn’t specifically state it…and I heard he sucks really bad!! Is this true?

have you looked him up on ratemyproffessor.com? If everyone who posts about him doesn’t like him, then your suspicions are probably right! I personally don’t have any experience with Conroy, sorry wish I could help!

Yeah, I looked him up on ratemyprofessor and the course evaluation catalog, and the reviews weren’t pretty. I guess I’ll just have to deal with it and really learn the material on my own or use CLUE.

Hi,
I want to complete Eng comp requirements in my first quarter. So, Which is an easy and interesting course to go for:

ENGL 131
ENGL 121
ENGL 111

any advice on which instructors for these courses would also be really helpful.

Haha I joined just to say how much I didn’t enjoy Conroy, by far my least favorite Prof. I think he teaches a lot of the 120 classes though so don’t know how to avoid him. Take loveless of you can. He’s great. I also had Bryant, she was funny but my least favorite Chem Prof of the 3 I had. She had to redo the curve on our entire class in July because she realized the grades were way lower than the other class.

English 111/21/31 are probably all TAs teaching and the class depends entirely on what they choose the topic to be. A lot of times the schedule doesn’t say what the course will be on, but eh, it’s an intro class that doesn’t mean much. You’ll take way better classes later. 111 was like normal English classes, reading and essays. I think some (?) of the 131 classes make you do service learning (aka required community service hers). Not bad, but a consideration.

@hikiki Thanks!
I have a few more questions though-

1-I’m gonna register for classes on the 22nd. I also need to complete Phys 121. Now my priority is Math and Chem, so I’m definitely gonna go for Math 124 and Chem 142 but for the third course, considering that its my first term, should I go for Engl C(111,121,131) or Phys 121. If I go for Engl C now, I will have to take PHYS 121 later probably with math 125/126 and chem 152/162 and it might just get really tough and intense. However if I take it in my first quarter along with math 124 and chem 142 I might not have such a hard time as chem 142 and math 124 I guess are relatively easier than chem152/162 and math 125/126. But I’ve also heard that you should take it easy in your first quarter. So to sum should I go for Engl C or Phys 121 as a third course in my first quarter?

2-I heard that you can only register for math once you have given a placement test, I’m an international student and will be registering for classes online on the 22nd. Does that mean I will not be able to register for any math classes? when will I be able to register?

3- Could you please suggest a good instructor form chem 142

Thanks :)

By the way, how is Li Xiaosong for chem 142, ratemyprofessor says he’s pretty good. Anyone taken his class??
