Classes at UC San Diego?

I just had a few questions:

  • Are the classes more lecture or discussion based?
  • How much are projects incorporated in classes?
  • Are classes taught by a professor of by a TA?
  • 50/50, depending on your class and department. Some bio and arts classes I’ve taken emphasize discussion as the heavily graded component, most engineering classes I’ve had have just used it as a problem solving session/extra office hours.
  • I’ve had a lot of classes with individual and group projects, ranging from a video in lower div honors chem to a full SBIR grant. Some majors also require a group senior design sequence or senior thesis for graduation. Teamwork is heavily encouraged.
  • Lectures are almost always taught by a professor, discussions are usually TA-led. Don’t think I’ve ever had it go the other way around, actually. Professors are also very accessible during office hours and after class.

It’s rare when TAs lead lectures… typically only happens in engineering classes (from what I know) because many of the professors go out of town to do conferences or research.

All visual art classes are very “discussion” heavy… aka studio time. I’m not too sure about other humanities courses. STEM discussions are for extra help or working through homework problems etc.
