How many classes on average do Rochester students take per semester? Especially interested in the classes that have accompanying labs (most science classes). Thanks!

Most students take 4 classes per semester. An accompanying lab (and also a recitation) is considered part of the class. Many majors show suggested class schedules for all 4 years on the department web site.

Its not uncommon for science majors to end up with 2 lab science classes every semester of their freshman and sophomore years. The lab requirements drop off as they enter their upper level coursework since most of the required labs are for the lower level/pre-req classes.

Science classes typically include all of the following: lecture, lab, lab lecture, recitation

Can you comment on the workload of a science major? Is it manageable? Is there grade deflation or inflation–do they curve? Thanks!

Workload is do-able, but it will depend on many factors–the quality of the student’s high school preparation, student’s work ethic, time management & study skills, student’s aptitude for the material, etc. But an adequately prepared and motivated science major won’t need to spend Friday & Saturday night studying it in the library.

All intro level science & math courses are curved, with mean centered at C+ or B-. (Depends on the course and the departmental policy.) The calc sequence classes (140 and 160 sequences) are curved on a course-wide scale. All calc sections have different instructors, but take a common exam and the curve distribution is based on that exam.

For most intro level science classes, the number of As are capped at ~20% of the class.

Graduate and professional schools do not view UR as having either grade inflation or grade deflation.
