Classical music studies in Europe?

I am researching options for a friend who is a talented classical pianist and would like to study piano performance and music education abroad, preferably somewhere in Europe. Any suggestions?

Does he speak another language? If not he is limited to England. If he speaks German, he has lots of good options. I do not know if it is still the case, but ten years ago, if you could gain admission to Hochschule fur Musik in Germany, the tuition would be free. There may be a charge now. Admission standards are very high. D one of 350 auditioning for opera program, 3 accepted. Good luck.

There are many colleges for music in Germany. Like in the US, some are higher level than others. My S was invited by a horn teacher in Hamburg to study there, if his applications in the US didn't bring the results he wanted. I have a vague recollection that the application had to be submitted by March or April. (Fall semester usually begins around Oct. 1.) He is actually mildly interested in studying in Essen. I have a hunch that admission might be helped by knowing a particular teacher.

Tuition is free in Germany - at least for German students; schools don't have dorms. The teacher siad that for music majors, my S's lack of German language wouldn't be a huge disadvantage, and he'd probably be able to pick up enough to get by.

My S visited a school in Valencia, Spain; where almost no English was spoken. I assume it varies from country to country.

Some of the best schools for music, eg. the Salzburg Mozarteum in Austria, are grad schools.

Thanks for your replies! Is anyone aware of a good source -- preferably online or else in book form -- that lists these colleges and provides some information about them?

Some schools are listed on Wiki.

My daughter went on Rotary fellowship. When she was preparing her application, she (and I) asked everyone if they could recommend a teacher in Germany. One woman's name came up several times, from a breadth of sources, and that is where she went. The woman is still her teacher, some 10 years later. So you might want to start asking players and teachers in your field.
