Has anyone attended past Classical Singer Competitions for the Musical Theatre side? My daughter just competed and has the opportunity to go to the next rounds in Texas. She is a high school freshman. Is it worth our time and money to travel there? Would she be considered a sophomore at the competition since she will be done with school by then (end of May)? Thx for any help!

We have gone twice, and will be going again this year. It is definitely worth going to. Most people go for the master classes and the opportunity to meet with the colleges, not really in hopes of actually winning (although that would be great). They have master classes on everything from technique to what to wear for college auditions to how to do a pre-screen for college. Many of the colleges do give scholarships (some very large scholarships), but those will mostly be to rising seniors. It is a great opportunity to meet other students interested in singing, and to learn about college and career plans and opportunities. We have become friends with other families from around the country that we have met through Classical Singer, and now run into them and other vocal events that my children attend. If you go, plan to arrive by Friday afternoon, and stay through Sunday. Last year about 25 of the kids got together on Sunday night after the competition, just hung out in the lobby and took turns singing. All the pressure was off and they had a blast sing ing anything they could think of for hours. I think we finally went to bed around 3am!

Thanks for responding weski2! Your description is what I was hoping to hear. Have you gone for the Classical side or the Musical Theater side (or both)?

I’m sorry to just now be seeing your question, and I hope you were able to attend this year. My child competes in both classical and MT, placed this year, and won some scholarships. We also got some fabulous feedback from colleges at master classes, so it was well worth going.
