Classics Depts --is Willams stronger or Amherst?

How strong is the classics dept @ Williams? Would you say that it's equal or better than the classics dept @ Amherst. From what we have gleaned from both schools websites, it seems that Williams has more to offer. Am I correct?

This sub forum seems to be so knowledgable about Williams! Any input would be fantastic.

Thank you in advance.

They’re roughly equal for Greek, but Williams has a slight edge for Latin. Adding the 5 Colleges gives a big advantage to Amherst. The offerings at Williams may or not be sufficient depending on his/her language background.

For details, you should probably do a search of the forums if you haven’t already. Mythmom has written about classics at Williams before. I am fairly certain there used to be a classics major from Amherst on here as well, but I don’t recall the username.

Haverford is generally the best bet for students who want a LAC but also a strong, rigorous classics program.

There are some amazing folks in the Classics Department at Williams including a young faculty member who does cross over work with Jewish Studies. I think one of my S’s favorite classes was “Theories of Kingship” across classical civilizations.

The strengths are the same as the rest of Williams: interdisciplinary and creative thinking. The weaknesses are the same too: lack of a good advisement program.

One particularly fun thing: The professor I spoke of was working on a project about the first sentence of THE AENEID. When S graduated two years ago it was already 25 pages long. I can’t wait until it’s published.

As my name indicates, I teach mythology. S teaches the AENEID unit, and I can’t touch his erudition in the area.

Thank you for your responses. We visited Haverford last April and DD wasn’t crazy about it.

Studying in Omrit might be of interest. [Omrit Archaeological Excavations | Classics](http://classics.williams.edu/omrit-israel-archeological-program/) gives information on the program.

I saw that program on the Williams College website! But thanks for the link, it looks absolutely amazing!!!
