carpe diem

I agree. Except for maybe the Late Antique Societies major that Brown has. But I'll have to see about that.

Salve!

Rock on Classics majors! I've been taking Latin since 7th grade, this will be my first year without it since I've taken as many courses as I can by now at my school.

yeah, classics is an awesome major. I chose Philosophy over classics as my major, but I still love Latin and ancient Greek/Roman history! Long live Catullus and Virgil!! :)

Have you guys seen the thread in the Parents Forum about majoring in film where everybody's bashing Latin?

ahhh! i spelt it "here" not hear, lol

Collegehopeful.. it's "Salvete"- plural.. hehhee
I'm going to major in classics, too. Anybody here went to NJCL convention 04?

Ha, the first Latin class I had we learned the difference between "salve" and "salvete."

Yesterday I walked into a Barnes and Noble and asked the employees where the classics section was. They looked at me like I had just asked them for plastic explosives. They didn't know what classics was. I thought about calling the corporate office at the time, but now I think I'll just quietly fume over it for months.

Oh, and I too think Catullus is fabulous. Especially Carmen 99.

Dux femina facti!

Count me in as one of the lucky ones who will major in Classics.

Vergil rocks my world.

Does anyone here study greek too? Or just Latin?

i'm a greekling for now. i'm probably not going to take any courses once i get to brown. but that's just because there's way too much else i want to take. :D

Haha, Salvete, oops! This is what has happened ever since I couldn't take Latin this year.

But actually, you guys are probably reading this site alone, right? Therefore, "salve" could be acceptable!

Elizabeth- Varium et mutabile... ;)

did any of you guys use Wheelock in high school?
We used that book for the first two years, then did the AP Lit (with Catullus and Ovid) the third year, then AP Vergil the fourth year :)

Greek is being offered at my school next year- of course, the year after I graduate. They started the accelerated program the year after I took Latin I, but they've instituted Latin V for a girl who transferred from prep school with some Latin under her belt and is ahead of schedule- I'm doubling up AP IV and AP V this year. Two Latin APs...it's an awful lot. For Literature I'm doing Ovid/Catullus, and then Vergil, obviously. We've only had one kid take Literature in the past, as an independent study, so any guidance you've got would be much appreciated.

have any of you taken the sat ii latin? is it hard?

I took it after 3 years of Latin (regular latin, not AP), took one practice test, and my teacher explained what elision was, and got a 670.

My brother took it after 4 years of high school latin (no AP then either) and one 400 lvl college course and still got a 670.

Don't know what to tell you.

From what I've heard, it's very very grammar based. Oftentimes kids who translate well and can score a 5 on the AP exams end up with surprisingly low scores on the SAT II.

Yeah I have not been so big on grammar. I took a practice test and its a lot like the AP tests in school (of course CB behind everything). I can't wait to actually get into a college classics course though... ahh ...

Oh yeah elizabeth22, I took Literature last, along with IB IV. Taking Vergil as a senior now. Our class did Horace/Catullus, and if I were you I would try to memorize as much as you can during the year so you dont freak out before the AP. Do not try to memorize EVERYTHING though. Oftentimes a good impression of the author and his style/outlook is more valuable than individual translation which you may be able to do on the spot. The multiple choice on the AP is fairly difficult, half is really not bad. If you are determined to get a 5, you should probably be scoring maybe 65-75 range at least.
