Clemson Honors, NC State, Georgia Tech, or Virginia Tech?

My son has been accepted into the Clemson Honors College, NC State, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech. We live in North Carolina, so NC State would be in-state tuition and we are still waiting on honors from Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. He also got $10,000 per year from Clemson, and we are still waiting for the Davenport Scholarship from Virginia Tech which is $7,000 per year. I was wondering what program would be best for him if he goes into chemical engineering both academically and economically?

What is the OOS tuition at GT, VT and Clemson with the scholies? What is your out-of-pocket for all 4 schools? Including room and board? What school does he like best? Has he visited any? Can you afford the OOS schools with or without the scholies?

Cost, of course, can be the trump factor but if cost is not the most important consideration, let me put in a plug for Clemson Honors. My son graduated from Clemson Honors several years ago in Engineering. We’re in Pennsylvania and his choices had been Penn State, VT, GT, NC State, and Florida. He visited them all and fell in love with Clemson, which, frankly, was not what we expected to happen. The thing that impressed him the most about Clemson, and particularly Honors, was the friendliness of the place and the focus on undergraduates. When he got there, he was not disappointed. He took advantage of the many research opportunities they offer including international research experience. He had publications as early as his sophomore year (ok, he wasn’t first author at that point!) and presented at an international conference as a junior. He even received a grant to volunteer at an African orphanage part of one summer. He’s now working on his doctorate at MIT. We couldn’t be happier with his Clemson experience.
