Would it be worth taking the CLEP Composition test to get out of English (Freshman in College)? I’m not great at English but I scored highly in English & Reading on the ACT. I’m an engineering/physics major that really hates English. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
My daughter took and passed the English Clep with minimal study, but English and writing are her strengths.
Just a word of advice-- You might want to consider that testing out of Eng 101 requirements might not be in your best interest, as you’re going to be expected to apply those writing abilities to future, higher-level courses and just passing the Clep won’t prepare you for those.
I took IB English in high school, and I don’t feel under prepared for future writing assignments, I’m more concerned about it taking up space in my schedule as I’d like to graduate in four or five years with two B.S. degrees as a double major. The class I’m looking to get out of is an intro to essay writing type class, and it should be one of the only English classes I’ll need to take in college.
What is the nature of the Clep Comp test?
If you are unaware of what is covered on the CLEP College Composition exam, I would suggest reading about the exam on the CLEP website.
You also need to know if your college/university will grant CLEP credit for this exam. Your original post does not make it sound like you were even told you could do this. Not all colleges grant CLEP credit. If your school does grant it, you will also want to make sure which exams they grant credit for. Some might say College Composition (which has a required multiple-choice section and a required essay section) and some might say College Composition Modular (has a required multiple-choice section and an optional essay section).
I cannot stress enough that you must check with your college’s registrar prior to taking any CLEP exam!
