So as we near our commitment to a school, I am starting to think about some next steps. Can any of you provide tips, warnings and advice on if and what CLEPS should be pursued. Do they need to be taken through the college, or can they be taken independently? When is it or isn’t it worth it? I am not necessarily looking for a way for my D to graduate early, as much as I am looking to satisfy Gen Ed classes and to free up more music classes.
S actually skipped the AP Spanish test because we heard the CLEP for it at his school was easier. It was true. It may be per school variations - we do not know.
You can take CLEP’s at community colleges and have the credit transferred.
My D used dual enrollment credits to cover some of her gen eds. This allowed her to take a lighter load her last semester senior year. This extra time senior year has been really helpful as she went through the travel audition process.
CLEP’s are not terribly difficult. Some kids hate academics, but for many, I think they lose out by taking CLEP’s. For kids already immersed in music, it is not a bad thing to take a few gen eds with a better educational value than studying for a CLEP. I will say that the (English) composition one is quite easy and might help some kids, who are already pretty good at writing, waive intro composition classes. Others may benefit from a writing class
