Whats the best school to go to for a Bachelors and Masters in Clinical Psychology?

Yale, U Penn, U Michigan

Don't think about a masters degree. You will need a PhD.

Sure, where you got for the BA matters, but at the same time, you can make anyplace work for you. Here is what I mean. My brother's good friend ended up transferring and going to UCR (Riverside) and majoring in Psych. He did amazingly well and was one of 2 people accepted to study with a rediculously famous prof in a UPenn psych PhD program. The point of the story is that doing well anywhere can lead you to your goals, and many places will offer enough psychology resources to allow for admissions to a top program. An "easier" school or less competitive program may even allow you to stand out more.

I think Berkeley is worhty of the list, but perhaps it's in the "second-tier top 10 not top 3" program area. They make you take a lot (6 or so) classes, some of which you limits certain courses that you can take and it does eat up time, but it is done to weed some people out, more through commitment than GPA (you need about a 3.0 or 3.25, which isn't that hard to acquire).

but why Ph.D. if i dont want to be a full on doctor? what difference will it make it between PhD and Masters?

you cant really do anything with a masters in psychology. you cant get licensed in clinical psych with a masters. you would have to get your msw if you dont want a phd or a psyd. also, clinical psych phd programs are EXTREMELY competitive- the nationwide acceptance rate is ~5%

so basically im screwed in clinical psychology....

well, it depends what you want to do with it. any thoughts on career?

Clinical psych might be realistic for you. What are your stats?

If not, there is PsyD, MSW, counseling, school psych, psychiatric nurse practioner...

i want to be a Clinical Psychologist. Diagnose people with mental disorders. Counseling also. I was thinking Criminial Psychology at first, working with criminals, but I dont know if I can handle that.

okay im a newbie here in the psych feild. so Stats? PsyD?

to be a clinical psychologist you must be licensed as a phd or a psyd.

A Ph.D. (Doctor of philosophy) is the more traditional doctorate in psychology. You are trained equally in research and clinical practice.

A Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology) is a newer degree, and it is basically all clinical practice with little research emphasis.

A Ph.D. is more prestigious and makes more money, but its much harder to get into a Ph.D. program than a Psy.D. because of the prestige as well as it is usually fully funded, where the cost of a Psy.D. is similar to the cost of med school. (aka A LOT).

Clinical psych is for working with people with serious mental illness, where as counseling psych is more working with people with adjustment issues and less severe mental disorders. you dont need a doctorate in counseling psych to be licensed.

A psychiatric MSW/LCSW (Masters of Social Work/Licensed clinical social worker) doesnt diagnose, but they do therapy.

social work programs are relatively easy to get into, and only take 2 years to complete. the phd/psyd programs take 5-6 years, and are quite competitive (the clinical phd is harder to get into than med school). a counseling masters is relatively easy to get into.

feel free to ask any other questions about the field (i was a psych major, got my masters in psych, working in the field now, and applying for my clinical phd)

Okay That cleared some things up.
but i've always been told clinical psychologists also did the less severe mental disorders as well.
But how well do counseling psychs do as compared to clinical? is the feild just as hard to get into? what do you need in counseling psych to be able to be licensed? is it just a masters?
Psychiatry requires med school correct?

Thank you so much for all of this. Im so clueless and turned around now.

Clinical psychologists also do less severe. However, counseling psychologists typically just do less severe.
Counseling psychologists usually can get licensed with just a masters. Howevere, because you are competing in the field with PhDs, you dont get paid as well. Counseling psych is easier to get into than clinical psych. masters programs are pretty easy to get into (you have to have decent stats of course, but you will most likely get in somewhere, unlike the crapshoot of clinical psych phd admissions).

Psychiatrists are Medical Doctors, so they have to go through med school, and do the same type of training as all of the other med students for the first few years. Basically the differences between a psychiatrist and a clinical psychologist are that a psychiatrist can prescribe meds, they get paid more, and many of them dont do therapy (they prescribe meds in conjunction with the psychologist), although there are some that do.
