Cliques

Hey, I heard that students at amherst are clique-ish. Is this true (like more so than at other schools)? I guess it’s not too big a deal, but I was just wondering. Thanks in advance!

As much as we like to deny it officially, I kind of agree that Amherst can be kind of clique-ish. However, it's a lot different from high school cliques. Yes, boys from the basketball team or dancers, or even sometimes races tend to stick together, but it doesn't mean they are strictly limiting themselves to that group. Most people on campus, although they may bbe in a "clique", are very open to others, and aren't in any way going to 'shun' them. I've met all sorts of people my first year here, various sports, clubs, races, social backgrounds.. so I guess I'm not personally in a clique, but there are some here. Just don't let that get you discouraged and go out and find people. They'll be receptive, no worries

I visited Amherst last summer. I found it too stuffy. Almost got the impression that it was a finishing school for college prep kids.

I am sorry you got that impression. Visiting in the summer doesn't really give you a total feel for any school, since the students aren't all there. We did the college trip in the summer, and realized we were getting a one-sided picture. I have visited my D a few times, and am a single, HS teacher. Certainly not rich, a first generation immigrant. And I haven't found this to be the case. Everyone was very warm and inviting that I met. D and most of her friends are from public schools, as are the majority of the students, and over 50% receive FA.

I visited last summer and did not get a negative impression at all. I don't understand how anyone could presume a snobby atmosphere as nobody was there during late July when we were there.

However the tour guide and admin people were very warm and I did get a very good vibe about the school. I will do an overnight this fall to get a better feel for the school.

I can also state with a certainty that there are at least two students who are very caring and they are evita's daughter and her friend.
