"coming from a prep school, my problem lies in the fact that i am one of very few students without a private counselor, so the school appointed ones aren't used to having to do much..... and they also can get confused w/ deadlines and school names (read : my transcript was sent to bu when i applied to bc)"

Yea I come from a New England prep school as well and, despite our resources, have little in terms of college counseling. I did all the selecting on my own, and I got the worst counselor and didn't get private counseling. The guy said that I should apply to "more 70%" schools, so I humored him and applied to U-Richmond and American. Today I received a likely letter from Trinity, a school he thought was a 50%, maybe 30% admit.

A little anecdote. One time he asked if I had registered for the ACT, on a Wednesday and the test was that Saturday. He thought that would be a 'good idea.' Thankfully, I had already registered.

Wow, I'm from a NJ private prep school too, and our guidance counselors are amazing. Their like the most helpful people in the world and know exactly what their doing. Their even helping me pick out electives and AP courses that would be most helpful for my intended majors.

"You got accepted to...what was it again...Cornwall?"

Private schools conselors aren't as good as public conselors from experience.

Apparently, according to one of my senior friends, the counselors last year (I go to a private, Catholic, all girls' school) really sucked. She told me to hire one out of school. But the counselors retired and the one I was going to get came from this really competitive all boys' school, where everyone gets into either a UC or an Ivy.

My counselor is amazing. I love her, she's the best thing anyone could ever have. All the A-M people envy us N-Z people because their counselor calls UCLA a "reach school" -- even to our really genius students.

I go to a private prep high school in PA. Our college counselors are really motivated and enthusiastic about the college admissions process. We even have a class dedicated to prepare us for the college admissions process. They try to get to know all the students and meet with every student individually at least 3 times or on a need basis. Pretty satisfied so far.

The counselors are all really nice, but they're not really informative. They just tell me things I already know. After the first time talking to them I sort of realized they wouldn't be much help.

I'm just a freshman but I heard that our old counselor got fired because she gave kids that failed (A lot of students fail) classes that they didn't need. I don't really talk to my counselor much except for scheduling.
