one time i heard a student describe it as such:

pomona = paradise
scripps = spa & resort
pitzer = purgatory
harvey mudd = hell
and even the devil didnt want cmc

haha but in all seriousness each college has their own distinct style and i think they complement eachother. it depends on what you like. personally i like cmc's campus better than, for example, yale's

When I visited CMC, I felt very, relaxed and at home. I really felt like I fit. I also walk around all the other campuses. True, Pomona is nice. But I didn't feel comfortable there.

Think about it this way. If you get into one of the less attractive schools, you can get your aesthetics by walking across the street to the other school...

CMC's campus is basically... basic. It's nothing to write home about. But yes, people feel at home and they often regard it as charming. You have to keep in mind that the school was founded with very little money, and decided to invest its money in faculty over facility. Now with a lot more cash, the school has hired world famous architects to design some big, expensive new buildings... so there will be a lot of changes in a short amount of time.

Just returned from CMC and Pomona visits. S2 liked CMC, disliked Pomona. Though the buildings were nice at Pomona, but cold. He felt the CMC campus was more "comfortable" and appealing. He also liked the curriculum and teaching approach at CMC.

^
idad can you share more of your son's and your impressions
Pomona vs. CMC
did you learn anything new during your visit?
anything of value to pass on to CMC prospective applicants?

CMC info session was much more personal and interactive. The speaker spent a great deal more time on the academic distinctiveness of CMC and their teaching methods. Internship opportunities were stressed and the efforts of the college to build a community through afternoon tea and the speaker's program (4X per week) described. No mention of anything like this at Pomona. Could just be speaker personality differences, but there was a smugness to the Pomona presentation that was not appealing. Over the years I have been to a several of these presentations (for S1 as well as S2), Pomona's ranks with Northwestern as being among the worst. They did mention Pomona students could attend the CMC events. CMC was overall much more inviting and stimulating. S2 will apply to CMC and not Pomona.

Very interesting. Matches a lot of impressions we have had.
Aside from the obvious leadership qualities, did you get a sense of anything else CMC were looking for?

HM looks like mid-seventies Czechoslovakia. I went to CMC, it is also pretty terrible, but I was either a) inside the buildings, b) lying in the grass in 75 degree weather, or c) drunk, so I never had a chance to be bothered by it.
