CMU Charpie Scholarship

DS just got an e-mail that he is being considered for the Charpie Scholarship at Carnegie Mellon--sounds like quite an honor and of course we'll research online. Wondering if anyone has any experience or knowledge of this. Thanks.

Well, I will save you a little bit of time and looking will only get you short blurbs on high school websites. Nothing is online about the Charpie Scholarship, nor is there anything about it from Carnegie Mellon. Even many of the people in admissions or aid have never heard of it. If your kid has gotten an invite to the competition portion, it means that they have an impressive enough resume to get noticed high up. Its a very competitive scholarship, but it is probably one of the premier opportunities at CMU that no one knows about. Good luck!

My daughter was awarded the Charpie at CMU last year. She is a TJ grad -- it is only offered to TJ students from Virginia and a few other schools. It's a tremendous honor as a merit scholarship. Candidates have to compete and the competition is real. Last year there were 12 finalists including 4 or 5 TJ students. They pick 4 scholarship winners. My daughter was set on going to another school when she was contacted and the Charpie weekend plus scholarship convinced her to go to CMU. They were right. She's a great fit for the school and she loves it there. You will meet her next weekend if you go to the competition weekend since last year's 4 winners are preparing.

Thanks! You’re right johnq–nothing anywhere else!
And yes, ganymede, we will see your D this coming weekend–how about that!

Can someone please elaborate on the opportunities as a Charpie scholarship winner( other than the tuition). Our son has been invited this year and we need a little more information. Nothing at all on the web regarding this.
Also what sort of competition will the finalists participate in?

Hi randrmom-- I couldn’t find anything on this 2 years ago either and am speaking here as a parent only–no official capacity. Basically there is a donor who covers the tuition for a few promising students at CMU. Those that are under consideration (may 15 or so) are invited up for a weekend where they get to know the school and a group of observers/evaluators get to know the kids. The kids participate in several group activities (parents aren’t there) and parents and kids go to a nice dinner where you hear about the impressive Charpie students and the opportunties this program offers (mentoring/training types of things). About a week or so after the weekend, the student is notified about whether or not they are on one of the finalists who will be offered the schlarship. My son was not, but we all enjoyed the experience. It gave him the chance to visit CMU and compare it to the other schools he had been admitted to. Hope this helps and Good luck!

Thank you so much for the information. We will be heading there this weekend.

can anyone shed some light on preparation work for the leadership exercises during the sleeping bag weekend, a requirement for the naming of the Charpie Scholars
