CMU Computer Science?

So I want to decide whether to choose the Carnegie Mellon CS program or not, and I am getting REALLY confused! Can anyone tell me what is so awesome about it, what type of job prospects i'll have, and any research i'll be able to pursue after doing it. Also, is how bad is it when compared to computer engineering? Keep in mind I am NOT doing comp engg!

CMU’s SCS as opposed to what? What about your financial circumstances? My advice will be very different depending on your other choices and financial circumstances (i.e. if your other choices are MIT, Stanford and Berkeley vs your other choices being NUS or NTU).

Well, its a complicated situation. The campus I am talking about is the Doha Campus in Qatar. Other choices include HKUST for either engineering or double major in tech and management, and texas a&m (Doha campus, again  ) for engineering programs in Chemical, Electrical and Computer, Petroleum, and Mechanical engineering.

What I am concerned about here is how good the computer science program is, and what is presents to me. BTW, The degrees presented at both the Pitts and the Qatar campus are the same.

Oh, and Financial circumstances don’t play an important part here, as admissions are need blind!

I am not sure about the Qatar campus. The main CMU campus however, is on par with MIT and Stanford for its computer science major.

The degrees may * look * the same (i.e. same curriculum, same graduation requirements, etc.), but they sure are not the same.

What makes CMU’s CS major * in Pittsburgh * one of the top 4 in the world (rivaling MIT, Berkeley and Stanford) is not just the curriculum, but also the top-notch faculty teaching it, the selective student body, the research facilities and programs available to interested students, and the great network of alumni and contact people in the IT industry (CMU’s SCS being of course one of the top feeders for companies like Microsoft, Google, etc.). I seriously doubt that will be duplicated in Qatar, even if the two programs have nominally the same undergraduate curriculum.

CMU Qatar may be therefore a good choice for locals who want to get a job in the region and will have the advantage of an American-style education, as opposed to the degrees they would earn from a local university. It shouldn’t be considered a serious option though IMHO for internationals coming from Singapore or other distant countries. Why don’t you apply to CMU Pittsburgh instead ?

You are right, Bruno, and I believe that the semester or two that I might spend on the Pittsburg campus would help me in bridging the gap in some ways.

Why not the main campus: No financial aid for intl’s like me!

@Flibb‌ you won’t believe it but i am in the same position right now. I wanted to do mechanical engineering, so I applied to texas a&m (doha, qatar) and HKUST. After I got around 7 to 8 rejections from top and mediocre universities in the US, I decided to apply to Carnegie Mellon for Computer Science (And I got in :D), although i am doubtful about the quality of the program at qatar as compared to CS at CMU pittsburgh. and after reading a lot of threads about HKUST which say that everything is great there except for the fact that the teachers suck (they teach on multi-media slide presentations and most of the students work their own way through exams by self prep).
I’ve got no idea what to do. I am expecting a conditional offer from HKUST and I haven’t heard from them as of yet although I applied in January this year. My GCE A Level exams are in may and the results will arrive in august when I will know whether I have met the condition set by HKUST but by then, the term at CMU qatar would have already started so I have decided that I will pay the admission deposit for CMU qatar. And I still haven’t heard anything from texas A&M qatar. Please guide me
